Chapter Fourteen

Katie

3 weeks later

Speed dating. Perfect. Exactly what Katie was in the mood for. This would be like an unmedicated root canal.

Let’s get this over with as fast as humanly possible.

The sign at the door to the bar said Closed for Private Event. In the glow of the holiday lights that bordered the doorway, she produced her Clark University Alumni Association card from her microscopic purse, the one she purchased last week after reading a Vogue article advising her that anything larger than a deck of cards was now hopelessly out of style. The tiny bag, with its embossed LVs and gold-tone chain, had cost more than her first car. It also required her to wear something with pockets if she wanted to carry her phone, a hairbrush, even a lipstick. Maximum capacity for the (she had to admit it) cute new bag was four cards, one key, an eye pencil, and two ibuprofen.

Which she figured she was going to need before she got home tonight.

There was a short line ahead of her but, blessedly, no one she recognized from college. When she reached the head of the line, she was handed a printed card, a pencil, and a badge with her first name and a number. Once inside, she headed for the bar, where the line was significantly longer.

“Sparkling rosé,” she told the bartender when her turn finally came. Drinks were supposed to be included in the $125 registration fee, along with hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, a deejay, and twelve four-minute “dates” with fellow Clark alums.

She had dutifully filled out the preliminary questionnaire, specifying “Interested in men,” “Northeast United States,” and “Children okay.” Since it was an alumni association-sponsored event, she assumed a college degree was a given. After some internal debate on age preference, she selected “None.”

Her own profile was nothing to be ashamed of, she told herself. Founding partner of a successful company, condo owner, MBA with added executive-education certificates. Well-traveled, speaks two languages. Volunteer experience and board service at women’s shelters. No kids (maybe want them someday), no pets (same). Hobbies: skiing, reading, skydiving (just kidding!).

Nothing on there about being a Nebraska high school football coach’s girly-girl daughter, who came to Massachusetts on a full-ride scholarship but spent most of her undergrad years writing cheesy keyword articles for $25 a pop on websites now long defunct.

Using a pen name – just Katie Lauren, her first and middle names – had been a prescient move. None of those articles followed her into her current line of work.

And none of the potential suitors here needed to know she’d worn a retainer until she was twenty, either.

Tactfully, the form did not ask why you were attending a speed-dating event in the first place. There were no spaces for “average length of previous relationships” or “number of dates in a typical month.
