Brenna monitored Jenny's insertion into a pod on the 77th floor. The transference of her mind was a little more disruptive than the usual node update, with a sub-current of neural activity that was definitely not in the normal ranges for adding a new sentient element to the network. The stream had the usual fractal-like patterns, but the color spectrum tended more toward the blue for about a minute before stabilizing back into the monochromatic norm.
It reminded her eerily of the pattern that formed during Leo's presence in the server room, though nothing that congealed into a shape or pattern. Rather, the blue streaks spread through the flow like veins, glowing neon paths on a bleak landscape, traveling in and out of view and eventually away to nowhere.
Once the stream had stabilized, she checked the computational load capacity. The increase was significant. The system was designed to utilize the pattern recognition capacity of each node, which could vary greatly with each insertion based on the life experience, intellect, and overall mental capacity of the donor. Particularly intelligent donors would not only increase the potential for recognition, but also the actual processing ability of the system. This was a purely unintentional side effect of the method developed to combine traditional computer technology with the human computer--the brain.
Jenny's insertion was not only adding significantly to the pattern engine, it had given the system a significant shot in the arm when it came to cross-referencing patterns with locations. If Brenna had had any idea this would be the result, she would have skipped all the foreplay and put Jenny straight in the box. It really was breathtaking how she had improved the capacity of the system, almost like she was meant to be here all along.
Brenna spoke into her voice recorder on her phone. "The subject, Jenny Mercado, has some inherent traits that are contributing to a significant improvement in overall system performance metrics. We may have stumbled on something with this one and definitely should examine her more closely to determine what she is bringing to the mix. Hopefully, with a better understanding, we can find more like her."
She approached Jenny's pod. There she was, naked and floating in a viscous clear solution, darkening with each passing moment toward its final resting color of black. She looked at Jenny's face, calm, peaceful, her hair floating around her head in long chestnut tendrils, like jellyfish arms without the purpose of propulsion, spreading and contracting in a rhythmic pattern.
"You are a special one, aren't you, Jenny? We're going to do such great things."
