After checking in his equipment, Victor was dressed in his service uniform for a debriefing with the Colonel and Captain.

‘On capturing Golgotha’s main flight deck we met no resistance. I proceeded to hack terminal A,’ Victor pointed to a hologramatic map of the battlefield, ‘upon opening the hatch I was met by crewmembers of the Golgotha.’

‘You mean the enemy, don’t you Lieutenant?’ said Colonel Rockey.

Captain Gibson and Major Mark Levin listened with bated breath.

‘Yes sir.’

‘Why didn’t you subdue them?’

‘They were fully co-operative and willing to lead us to our objective.’

‘What led you to believe that?’

‘They were unarmed and co-operative, sir.’

Rockey sneered, ‘Continue Lieutenant.’

‘I stationed squad four at the Bird and proceeded with squad one, two and three. Escorted by the enemy we entered a large gathering area where I made visual contact with my secondary objective.’

‘Why didn’t you snatch him upon making contact?’

‘Well I noticed radical changes had been made to the layout of the Golgotha. Our training was based on ship plans that were, obviously, no longer relevant.’

‘You didn’t answer my question Lieutenant, why didn’t you snatch him and extract information as to the location of your primary objective?’

‘Because in my opinion that would’ve been a really stupid thing to do, sir.’

Gibson grunted, his humour breaking through. Major Mark Levin, an ex-Spetsnaz soldier who possessed less humour than empathy folded his arms, a grizzled face glared down.

‘Proceed Lieutenant.’

‘I co-operated with the secondary objective and his disciples until making visual contact with the primary objective. All this time Specialist Nass had been hacking into Golgotha’s computer mainframe to pull what construction plans he could find and acquire access to her functions.’

‘Standard procedure Lieutenant, we don’t hand out silver stars for that.’

‘Yes sir.’

‘Continue.’

‘Sergeant Michaels informed me of an EM barrier between us and the primary and secondary objectives. I humoured our hosts for a while until Nass could cut the field. After a few hours Sergeant Michaels informed me the field was down, I immediately snatched my primary objective. The secondary objective fled. I secured the primary objective before pursuing the secondary, sir.’

‘Why did you pursue the secondary objective alone?’

‘I didn’t, Specialist Zeng accompanied me, sir.’

‘She prevented you from making what was nearly a fatal mistake Lieutenant, I’ve seen the footage!’

‘Understood sir.’

‘Do you know how much it costs to purchase, prepare, train and maintain an officer in the Necron Marine Corps Lieutenant?’

‘No sir.’

‘What that slanty eyed bastard dangled in your face is PEANUTS compared to upkeep for men like you!’

‘Yes sir,’ said a dejected Victor.

‘Carry on Lieutenant.’

‘I pursued my secondary objective and with Specialist Zeng’s assistance subdued and returned him to the Blackbird where both objectives were restrained and returned to Mother.’

‘Nothing else?’

‘No sir.’

‘Your recording equipment failed for a short time in between, while you were alone in Golgotha’s main chamber, do you have anything to tell me about what happened during that time?’

‘I can’t explain the equipment failure, sir.’

‘You ordered Nass to open the airlocks leading to Argus six, permitting the enemy to escape, explain Lieutenant.’

‘This was a search and retrieve mission sir, those were my orders, nothing more.
