The two men exhausted every gambling house and saloon in Abilene looking for Nate Carter. He was not found.

“This is ridiculous! How could he disappear so completely?”

“I don’t know. It is just like he fell in a hole.”

“What do we do now? We can’t just quit. He was in Jacksboro. The sheriff said he was going to Abilene. Where could he have gone if he didn’t come here?”

“We should have asked at Fort Belknap. Perhaps someone there’d seen him.”

“Then let’s ride back up there and ask. The sheriff at Jacksboro said he took the Butterfield Stage Road. The trail goes right by Fort Belknap and you’re right, we should have asked.”

In a blinding rainstorm, they rode toward Fort Belknap. They’d checked the two forts, Phantom and Chadbourn. Now, riding back northeast, they would check those between Fort Richardson and Abilene.
