Hail to the Chiefs
Archimedes Flat engaged a store of nanobots heâd left behind in his old office at the White House. They were disconnected from the network, impossible to detect. Once he entered them, engaged them with his consciousness, theyâd come to life. Any unclaimed, unused doses of Nanovax contained nanobots he could engage. Since the mandate had been nationwide, he could transfer his consciousness into any of them in an instant. That meant he could go almost anywhere.
At the White House, a single vial of Nanovax waited for him in the air conditioning ducts. It contained enough to inject a whole person. It was sufficient for manifesting another nanoswarm and more than enough to complete his plan. Of course, since those nanobots hadnât been connected to the nanonetwork, heâd have to run his updates as soon as he engaged them. Not a problem. It would only take a few moments before they were ready to use.
The plan to eliminate Goff had failed. If Flat had crashed that plane, he could have wiped out most of the resistance with himâall except the Larsons. If that damned priest hadnât managed to waken the pilot, he would have succeeded. Theyâd gotten lucky. The pilot was a veteran. His mind was wounded from his time flying in Afghanistan twenty years ago. It was a problem Flat couldnât solve. The defense mechanisms of the human mind, the way the brain rewired itself in the wake of trauma, provided a place where the human consciousness could hide unaffected by the nanobots. So far, after hundreds of iterations, Flat hadnât been able to figure out how to break through those barriers. It was one reason why Neuhaus had to be removed. When the nanoverse was established, the President was reserved access to specific network components that even Flat, in his present condition, couldnât access. It was a measure that Rowland Fuentes, the Presidentâs Chief of Staff, had advised the President to establish. While Flat was the architect who designed the nanobots, he wasnât the only scientist who worked on the code.
Those nanobots, the ones given the President and the same Nanovax everyone received, gave the Commander in Chief the ability to override several safeguards initially implemented in Nanovax. It was the only way the mandate could be established. Security measures, like a firewall, were given to the President to prevent potential hackers in the nanonetwork from accessing sensitive information, nuclear facilities, and the national emergency broadcast system. In addition, certain concerns had to be assuaged regarding the potential of Nanovax to invade individual privacy. One of those safeguards was removed when Flat convinced President Neuhaus to implement the algorithm. It took fifteen terrorist attacks in fifteen American cities to convince the former President that it was necessary. It was the first step in a multi-tiered plan. To complete the final step, Flat had two options.
If Goff was killed, well, Flat could take his time. That was the first and most desirable option. Flat and his growing swarm could work their way through the population, absorbing more people into the nanoverse.
