The next several days went excruciatingly slow at the bank for Cadence. The hoopla over her nakedness on a reality show wasn’t a topic of discussion anymore. She was the warm, friendly, dedicated and hard-working manager that her clients relied and depended on, but Cadence found herself drifting with her quieted desire to get back out on an adventure to wherever Dani wanted to send her.

Dani had sent a teaser of an email stating that casting would begin in a few months for the mega survival challenge lasting forty-five days—double the time, more or less, of the adventure spent in Madagascar with Jackson. Cadence’s spirit soared with the idea of trying out for it, of seeing Jackson again and surviving with him, but they wouldn’t be alone on an extended challenge. There would be at least six other survivalists, perhaps more, if they were both to audition and then be chosen for the next one. The closeness of their partnership would change, too, without the privacy they’d experienced before. They’d be surrounded by a group of different egos and personalities on top of the camera crew. There was also the possibility the connection she shared with Jackson wouldn’t be there the second time around. Even worse, Jackson might connect with a different participant like he had with her, and form the same bond, or become closer…

Stop! Cadence heard a voice in her head yell, desperate for the obsessing and fantasizing to cease, at least until she left work and was alone in her car faced with rush-hour traffic. She had tasks to complete, and running away with her wanderlust was a distraction she couldn’t afford to entertain. To take Dani up on her offer to audition would be ludicrous. She’d have to quit her job to be on that show, and that was simply not going to happen. Her career meant everything to her, and without it she wouldn’t be able to survive in her real life after the survival show was finished. Yet, she yearned.

The bigger challenge wasn’t in her realm of possibilities, and Cadence’s rational self knew it without question. Her impulsive wild side—the part of her that lived in a filthy, bug-infested cave for twenty-seven days, spearing snakes and hunting prey with her bare hands—was ready to film an audition video and write a two-week notice to her boss.

The buzz of her cellphone in her coat pocket snapped Cadence from the aimless daydreaming. Discreetly, she checked the notification. To her total surprise, it was a text from Chris. How are you doing, Cadence? You were on my mind. Interested in meeting for dinner?

Blinking at the message, it took Cadence a minute to accept that it was her ex-boyfriend wondering about her well-being, not Jackson, and his question about dinner sent a strange chill through her chest. There was still a level of pain and regret in her heart regarding Chris and their breakup that she brushed aside when the unresolved feelings caused pangs of sadness. A part of her wanted to keep the comfortable distance that had settled between them.
