Chapter

Twenty-Three

GWEN

If the definition of insanity was repeating an action and expecting a different result, what did that say about me? There I stood at another opening in Azure House wondering what lay beyond.

I looked over my shoulder at Lucy. "You're more than welcome to come in."

The smile on her face was gentle rather than mocking as she squeezed my arm. "I would if I could. Baby, this is one of those things that you're gonna have to face on your own."

I nodded, sucked in a breath, and then opened the door.

Like the rest of the house when I moved in, the furniture and items hanging on the walls were covered with drop cloths. The only difference was that the office wasn’t free of dust.

Okay, this wasn't so bad. I’d get my Dora the Explorer on. Filled with unexpected excitement, I pulled my phone out to shoot off a text to…

Kyle. That wrenching feeling in my chest returned.

This sucked. Give me a romantic breakup. Losing a friend was worse than losing a partner. After Rita and I dissolved our friendship, I swore never to let someone in so deep that I’d envisioned our old age together. I recovered from her, but Kyle? Not sure that would ever happen.

I shook myself. This wasn’t the time for a pity party. Instead, I hurried across the room to an upright piece of furniture covered with a cloth. Once exposed, I stood before a mirror like the one in my bedroom.

I squinted, then leaned closer. “Hm.” Similar, but not alike. This had slightly different patterns in the wood frame. Whether it was stupidity or instinct, I traced the swirls and curlicues, mesmerized by the patterns. Patterns that were similar to the ones Ash drew.

Shit.

“What are you doing?” I chastised myself as I recoiled, then double-checked that my thumb wasn’t still bleeding. Just my luck, I’d accidentally open another portal to the unknown.

I walked around the room uncovering furniture, exposing a soft, comfortable couch, a couple of chairs, and an ornate dainty desk. It wasn't dainty as in useless, like front pockets in women's jeans, but it was clear that the craftsman had created it with feminine ideals.

It was gorgeous. We're talking delicate curlicues and swirls that matched the furniture in my bedroom, and an inlaid marble top. It wasn't exactly a roll-top desk, but it had a small riser with little cubbyholes and two doors.

I tugged on the top center desk drawer and it was locked. No problem, I could pick it later if I didn't find the key. The room made me smile. If curling up on a couch watching raindrops roll down the window pane had an aesthetic, this was it.

It was clear that my ancestors had good taste, but this space was exquisite—and the perfect room for reading. “Focus, woman.” That I was speaking to myself made me giggle again.

My life might have been a little batty at the moment, but it was mine, and I planned to ride this bitch until the wheels came off.
