2. Let Children Grow in a Relaxed Manner, Freely and Happily
My take on the ideal parent is that one will forever maintain a youthful attitude and understand how to give children their own childhood and childlike innocence. Ideal parents also let children grow in a relaxed manner, freely and happily.
In Ming Dynasty philosopher Li Zhi’s Theory on Childlike Innocence, he believes that the innocence and whims of a child are the most precious. Childlike innocence has no hypocrisy, no mutual deception, and no intrigue. A child’s smile is the most innocent, the most natural, and the most dazzling. A child’s innocence is something that no riches in one’s life can replicate, the most real and most beautiful flower of humanity, and the most genuine and purest breeding ground for humanity’s future. Only children who fully enjoy innocent fun can have a healthy disposition, a perfect personality, and developed thinking. Parents must treasure their child’s innocence just as they treasure their own eyes. Childlike innocence is the truest mirror of childhood; innocence is pure, immaculate, and uncontaminated. Only with a childlike innocence can one open oneself up to accept love; only with childlike innocence can one be filled with an interest to explore; only with childlike innocence can one expose one’s inner world; and only with childlike innocence can one expose one’s all without glossing over anything. The key to educating people is to educate their hearts. Parents must not teach the profane and vulgar to children. Parents who teach children to be good at pretending, covering up, and currying favor will undoubtedly stifle children’s pure nature.
When parents are teaching children, they must maintain a youthful attitude themselves. Parents must return to their childhood days and strive to play together and grow together with their child and to become one of the children. Parents should respect a child’s interests and hobbies as much as possible, allow children to go down the path that they have chosen, and appropriately guide them, to truly “give their childhood to their child.” The children of today, especially children living in the city, no longer have any childhood joys. The games of yesteryear are all but gone, and so unearthing traditional games and helping children to recover the childhood that truly belongs to them has already become an urgent task for parents.
Presently, when a child has just been born, or even before he has been born, many parents have already envisioned a future for him and expect him to become a music maestro, a great painter, and so on. Prematurely having children learn passively and master various skills is actually not a proper and reasonable approach. Many parents believe that games are merely games and playing is merely playing. They believe that games and play are only a waste of time and energy. This view is completely wrong. Parents should recognize that games and play are an important source of a child’s cognitive and creative world. While playing games, children’s imagination and creativity can be fully developed.
