Sheâd been allowed to go to bed, but spent the night tossing and turning, unable to sleep for fear of what would happen in the morning. Despite the worst-case scenario â getting expelled â being exactly what she wanted, it was still frightening to think of, yet again, being hauled in front of Mrs Spearman.
Immediately after breakfast, that was exactly where she was sent. As she tiptoed along the corridor towards Mrs Spearmanâs office, she heard whispers in voices she recognised. Her father was already there. Why had he brought Jill with him?
Pausing at the entrance to the room, she strained her ears to hear what they were saying. Clearly, they were trying not to be overheard.
Her father spoke first, his voice a strained hiss. âI still canât believe she was trying to run away. Is she that unhappy here? I thought weâd sorted all that out. She said she wanted to come back.â
Jillâs voice was a more reassuring murmur. âShe did say that. You canât blame yourself. Weâre here now and we can get this sorted out. She can come back with us if she wants to.â
There was a pause before her father spoke again. âBut then we would need to tell her. About us, I mean.â
Gabbieâs stomach flipped over. What did that mean?
The click of the English mistress Miss Smallmanâs high heels at the other end of the corridor startled Gabbie into standing up straight and turning the corner to see her father and Jill waiting on chairs outside Mrs Spearmanâs office. He was dressed in a suit, she in a formal dress, as if she were going to a job interview. In one hand, her father held a saucer with a cup of tea which was balanced on his knee. His other hand was being held by Jill.
