Chapter 25

Cass floated in a fever-induced fog, and every time she surfaced, Sawyer was there. Pressing her back into bed. Offering her little sips of water. Stroking her hair away from her face.

He’d helped her change clothes. Not what she’d wanted, but she’d been in no condition to argue. And he’d seen her in a panic when she thought he was Dominic. An explanation would be in order in the very near future.

Lying on her side, Cass stretched and bumped into a hard body behind her.

“You’re awake,” a deep voice whispered in her ear. He sounded tired, and she wanted to roll over to see how he looked after a night of sleep. Would he be scraggly with a heavy shadow beard and tousled hair jutting up in all directions?

“How long?” she asked in a froggy voice. She cleared her throat and tried again. “How long did I sleep?”

“Well, it’s Sunday almost noon.”

“No! I slept all of Saturday?”

“You did. God, you are so damn sweet when you’re sick.”

“Sweet? Do you mean that I’m not normally sweet?”

His chuckle was nothing but a deep rumble she felt through the mattress. It was sexy and oh so intimate, and suddenly the fact that she hadn’t brushed her teeth in more than thirty-six hours was mortifying.

“You are always sweet. Once your fever broke, you just cuddled in.” His arm was around her waist, and she realized he’d draped the weighted blanket over the top of her. “I decided to rest under this heavy blanket to see what all the fuss was about. I noticed you’ve got quite the production line going out in the living room. “

“Oh, no!” She shot up to a sitting position, the room spinning with the movement. “I have three more to finish. That was my goal for this weekend. For yesterday. I can’t believe I slept through the entire day!”

Sawyer easily pulled her back down and into his arms. “It’s fine. You still have some time today.”

“But they’re Christmas orders. I need to ship them by Tuesday morning to ensure they make it to their destination in time for Christmas.”

“I can help.” At his words, Cass let out a small grunt of laughter, and then he said, “But first I need to kiss you.”

She felt a tug on her shoulder attempting to roll her. “No! I haven’t brushed my teeth in days.”

“Nonsense.” He pressed her onto her back and settled on top of her. It was delicious to feel him that close. “We both have morning breath.”

And with that, his mouth landed on hers. It wasn’t a long kiss. More just to show her that he hadn’t lost interest in the couple days she’d been out of it.

“Good morning, beautiful.”

“Good morning, handsome.” Cass’s fingers feathered over the pillow marks on his cheek. “This wasn’t the weekend I had planned for us.”

“Some things can’t be planned.” He plunked a kiss on her forehead and shifted off of her. “I’m going into the kitchen to get breakfast going while you shower. Any requests?”

“French toast.
