Chapter 11
I could have sworn the nurse had stopped just outside my hiding spot, and my fingers closed around my gun. I was ready to pull it the moment the door twitched, and I was already trying to figure out how much time Iâd have to get back to the room, wake Rayne, and get the hell out of City Hall.
But then the footsteps started to dissipate, and soon, the only sound in the room was my own breathing. I waited in the cupboard for a few minutes, just in case one of the doctors had decided to stay behind, but when the silence dragged on, I peeked around the door and found myself alone in the lab.
I let out a long, tense breath and let go of my gun. I lingered in the doorway of the cupboard Iâd hidden in for a moment while I tried to process what in Godâs name I had just witnessed. The image of them plucking the baby from the motherâs belly was still very fresh in my mind, the baby which, until ten minutes previously, had never existed.
And then there was the doctorâs hand that had turned into some kind of fleshy syringe. Was this another genetic mutation that separated the City Folk from the Snow Folk? But how had such a mutation happened so quickly?
Whatever the hell it was, it was gross as fuck.
I also couldnât shake the coldness with which they had treated the mother. It was clear the doctors hadnât considered her to be anything more than a womb, and I wondered how many other women had died in that room.
Everything about the whole procedure was just off. Birthing the child in a room off the robotics lab in the middle of the night seemed sketchy as hell, unless the woman had gone into labor while visiting City Hall. But I was sure she hadnât been pregnant before the doctor injected her, so where had the woman even come from.
And if sheâd been expecting to give birth, then why had they shipped the baby off to another city the moment it was brought into the world without giving the mother a chance to spend time with the child? I didnât like that there were only four doctors and no other staff present, or that the mother was unconscious through the whole thing⦠Something was seriously wrong on this planet. I thought that the City Folk were the better side of the creatures from Nix, compared to Mjol and his starving tribe, but now, I wasnât so sure. Maybe the snowy tundra had been the lesser of two evils after all, and the boiling city was just dressed up nicer to mask what was really going on.
âYou should probably get back to your room,â Francine said. âJust in case someone comes to check you are both still there.â
âYeah,â I sighed.
I was disappointed that my mission had been unsuccessful, but Francine was right. Plus, Iâd found something out that was arguably just as interesting, though not as useful as the titanium tubing would have been.
