Chapter 10
The most spine-chilling part about being inside the Skelg was the noise. The first sounds I heard were the echoes inside its cavernous mouth. The noise swelled as soon as its mouth closed as though the sound was rolling around the walls like a rollercoaster on a loop. There was a rumbling, too, that shook the ship and everything around it.
It took me a moment, but I realized it was the creatureâs voice, or more accurately, itâs groans. I didnât know if it was because it was in pain or because it was a side effect of having its brain controlled by the Karaak, but either way, it was an unsettling, strained noise that bored into my eardrums like a drill. There was also a whistling sound in the background that added to the creepiness of the whole thing, though I decided that was probably just the sound of the Skelg sucking in its food.
And that was just the organic sounds. Around it was the creaking and groaning of the mechanical elements of the mothership. The creature had been gutted like a fish, just like the youngsters, and where there had been flesh, there was now metal, plastic, or other infrastructure that didnât belong inside its body. There was a hum of electricity all around us, and without the shields, we could feel the static discharge in the air. Compassion aside, the fact that the Karaak could create something like this out of a living being was beyond comprehension.
Of course, it was pitch black inside the creatureâs mouth, so we werenât able to see any of our surroundings. I could hear small bits of debris clatter against the ship. Most of it sounded small and did little more than ping against us, but every so often, something larger would smack against the ship, and Rayne and I would both cringe.
âSo creepy,â Rayne muttered.
I nodded but didnât speak. I had no idea what type of sensors the Karaak might have on their ship, and I wasnât about to give them any clues to our presence until I absolutely had to.
At least we werenât in free-fall anymore, though we were still tumbling freely, in low gravity. The only way I could tell whether we were upright or sideways was by the pull on my harness. Sometimes, I was hanging upside down, and then the ship would turn a little, and I would feel the shipâs gravity tug pull at my side.
Rayne was still holding on tight to my hand, but other than her one comment, she remained quiet as well. Every so often, she would squeeze a little tighter, usually when something heavy would thunk against our ship, but otherwise, the only way I knew she was still there was the faint sound of her breathing.
At one point, we began to turn slowly until we were upright again. I shook my head a little as the blood rushed back out of my head, and I was glad that the pressure had been released.
