Chapter 11
This was like the worst hangover Iâd ever had.
My eyes were closed, but everything was still spinning. I felt like I was suspended on a wire and somersaulting over and over again. My eyes scraped my eyelids, which were covered in a thick layer of cracking crust, and my mouth was so dry that it felt like it was filled with cotton wool. There was a weight on my chest, bile in my throat, and sickness in my stomach, but all of that was nothing compared to the headache. The beast inside my brain brought its hammer down nice and hard on the anvil that was my brain about every three seconds, and my whole body ached because of it.
Wait. This wasnât a hangover.
No. It definitely wasnât.
This was from the upload. Iâd been sitting in Hypherâs workshop, and heâd gone to look for connectors. Iâd asked for a short update on my wiring knowledge, pressed Francineâs shell in my suit, andâ¦
There had been so many images that my brain still reeled if I tried to remember it. So many thoughts and facts and sights and sounds had sunk into my subconsciousness that it almost made me sick as the overwhelming tidal wave threatened to drag me under once again.
It took everything I had to to push the information away, and I slowly became aware of my surroundings. After a few deep breaths, I realized that the workshop was far too quiet. The buzz of Rayneâs saw was gone, and I couldnât hear Hypherâs muttering, either. Iâd been in the workshop when I had the upload, but now, I was pretty sure I was somewhere else.
The new place was somewhere silent and soft. There was a mattress beneath me, and a blanket over my body. That meant my skin was bare.
Where the hell was my suit?
I tried to peel my eyes open, and the gloop over my lashes ripped apart as I did so. Immediately, I cringed as the bright light, so fucking bright that I wondered if my retinas had just been burned clean off, flooded my eyes. I squeezed them shut again, puffed out a breath, then tried again.
This time, I managed a squint. Fuck, why were there so many lights on in here?
Wherever âhereâ was.
I stifled a groan, just in case there was someone in here with me. I didnât want them to know I was awake. Not until I knew where I was and what I was dealing with.
I moved my arm, but there was something wrapped around my bicep.
Was I tied down?
No. I could move it freely.
I turned my head slowly and peered at my right arm. There was a strap around it, sort of like one of those cuffs that we used on Earth to measure blood pressure. It sure squeezed hard enough to feel like one of them, too.
I followed the wire the cuff was attached to and found that it led to a machine. After a few more seconds, I decided it was a monitor, which showed six different graphs simultaneously.
