CHAPTER 39

PIERCE

I strode across the lot feeling like a new man. When I’d rolled out of bed this morning, the last thing I expected to happen was a quickie in my office. I felt like I’d just been given a shot of adrenaline. I was a whole new man. I realized I was grinning like a fool and quickly hid it away.

“Don!” I called out.

He stopped what he was doing. “What’s up?”

“Do you think you can hold this down for a couple hours?” I asked.

“Sure,” he said. “Everything okay?”

“Yes, I’m going to take a long lunch with a friend.”

“You mean the lady you’ve been in your trailer with?” he asked with a grin.

“Yes, that would be the one,” I said.

“Take your time,” he said. “There’s nothing I can’t handle here.”

“Thanks.”

I went over what needed to get done while I was at lunch before walking back to the trailer. I walked inside and found her staring at the drawing on the wall. It was my inspiration. When things got rough, I focused on the drawing. I kept my eyes focused on the goal.

It wasn’t exactly art, but it was my vision. I didn’t need all the pretty details. I knew what I was going for.

“Did you draw this?” she asked.

“I did,” I said.

“I had no idea you were an artist,” she said.

I shrugged. “I don’t think we can call that art. It’s a sketch. A vision.”

“Your vision is pretty impressive,” she said. “I don’t have that kind of creativity. I love that you had a vision and you brought it to life.”

“I probably should have taken a few drawing classes,” I said with a laugh.

“Did you do the actual designs?”

I nodded. “I did, but I worked with an architect to draw up the official plans. He made his own final drawing, but I liked mine better.”

“It’s personal to you,” she said. “I like it. I can see your little touches here and there. The trees and plants with the table sitting outside of that house. It looks lived in. Like a home and not a drawing.”

“Thank you,” I said. “That was the idea. When I sit down and draw these things, I’m thinking about the people living in the community. I imagine them sitting outside their tiny homes after a long day at work. They get to unwind with other community members. They can drink a beer or have some coffee or whatever. The idea isn’t about making million-dollar houses. It’s a community first. A place to rest and recuperate while taking those first big steps forward back on their journey. The aesthetics are really kind of secondary.”

“It’s perfect,” she said, smiling. “I love it.”

“Should we go?” I asked.

“You’re sure you can get away?” she asked again.

“Positive.”

We took my truck to a restaurant not too far away. We ordered burgers, fries, and sodas and sat out on the patio. “So, how many ladies have visited you in that trailer?” she asked with a coy smile.

“My mama,” I replied. “But I can promise you, our conversations never required I lock the door.
