Liam was waiting in the parking lot of Kurt’s apartment building when Mark showed up.

“Rebecca made me dinner tonight. She’s got it in the stove keeping it warm,” Liam said by way of greeting.

Mark grunted. “She should get used to that. It comes with being a cop’s wife.”

“Fingers crossed,” Liam said.

“You don’t think she’ll turn you down, do you?”

“I’m never quite sure what she’s going to do,” Liam said.

“Well, at least that keeps life interesting.”

“That’s one word.”

“What’s wrong with interesting?” Mark asked.

“It’s the subject of a Chinese curse. May you live in interesting times.”

“Yeah, well if you wanted peace and tranquility and all that other stuff you shouldn’t have become a cop.”

“I became a cop so other people could have those things,” Liam said.

“Noble. A bit stupid maybe, but noble.”

“And why did you become a cop?”

“To be honest, I don’t think I remember anymore,” Mark said, looking at a rickety looking flight of stairs. “This place doesn’t have an elevator does it?”

“From the looks of it this place was built before that was a requirement,” Liam said.

“Great.”

“So, why are we here?” Liam asked.

“Someone went on a website and posted a picture of a cotton candy girl and said he was looking for her.”

“You think the killer did that?”

“Maybe.”

“That’s a gutsy move,” Liam said.

“That’s one way of looking at it.”

“Anyway, this guy Kurt admitted to knowing all of them but wouldn’t give out their information.”

“So, you think the killer would actually track him down looking for it?” Liam asked, skepticism in his voice.

“I know, it’s a longshot, but it’s all we got.”

They made it upstairs and headed down the row of apartments until they found Kurt’s. Mark knocked on the door and waited.

The door to the apartment next door opened and a woman stared out.

“You the police?” she asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” Liam said.

“It’s about time. It’s been forever since I called in that complaint.”

“Excuse me, ma’am, which complaint?” Mark asked quickly.

“About them, next door. I don’t know what they have going on, but there was a whole lot of screaming,” she said.

“Ma’am, we need you to get back inside,” Liam said.

She closed the door and Mark looked at Liam.

“Someone screaming for help might be what she heard,” he said.

“Works for me,” Mark said.

Mark reached out and grabbed the doorknob. It was unlocked.

Liam pulled his gun as Mark pushed the door open. Liam moved quickly inside, through the main room and into the back.

Mark made it into the main room and stopped.

“Clear!” Liam shouted from the back before returning.

Mark stared at a body on the ground. The man was bloody and unmoving. It looked like someone had beaten the guy to death. Mark crouched down next to the body to get a closer look. Swollen and discolored as the face was, he still recognized it from the picture he had seen earlier.

It was Kurt.
