DHARMESH KURIAN, 18

Dharmesh is a couchsurfer who lives in a house too small to host anyone. Despite this fact, he wants very badly to spend time with people from far-off places. So, instead of a couch, he offers his time. He wrote a post to Couchsurfing.org inviting travelers to join his cricket team, which plays every afternoon. All I had to do was respond and show up—no prior experience required.

It was clear to anyone with eyes that it was the first time I’d ever played. I was a complete disaster—not to mention the fact that, between the heat and the humidity, I had zero energy to begin with. It didn’t matter, though. Dharmesh and his friends pretended not to notice my weaknesses, lack of skill, or total ignorance of the rules. Dharmesh made a valiant effort to help me understand the game and feel like part of the team. He tried to explain how to grip the bat and which were the best positions, and taught me tricks to hitting the ball right and then running. The truth? I still don’t really get it. Maybe it was the heat or simply that I was out of shape, but for every ten minutes of play, I had to take half an hour to rest. Dharmesh and his friends, on the other hand, went on for three hours straight—no breaks at all!

My experience with Dharmesh and his friends was one of the most authentic I had in India. I learned a lot from it—beginning with the fact that I should exercise more often than I do.
