Chapter 13

Rosaline

I’m not a jealous girl, but sitting here, watching Salma and Archer frolic in the pool from the corner of my eyes, I can see green fumes coming out of my body. I’m not too fond of this feeling, but it’s not something I can help.

I contemplate returning to the house, but that’ll be openly giving in to the jealousy consuming me. Archer isn’t mine, so there’s no valid reason why I should feel this way. Elle suddenly materializes in front of me, water dripping on me as she hovers over me.

“Can we go inside?” she asks, picking up the towel beside me.

“Why?” I ask, getting off the chair.

“I’m so hungry,” she says, slipping her arm around mine and leading me toward the back door. “Let’s go see what we can eat.” We walk inside, leaving a water trail behind us.

“I left some pasta.”

In the kitchen, Elle puts some pasta on a plate and starts to wolf it down. “I’m so hungry. I didn’t eat breakfast.”

“Why?”

“Luke and I had to go to my grandma’s church to see the pastor,” she says. “He told me he sent you to pick up his suit with Archer.” Then she wiggles her brows and smiles. “How was it?”

“We had a great time.”

“So why don’t you look happy?” Elle walks to the fridge, giggling when she looks back at the water trail she’s leaving. “If your mom were here, she’d have my head.”

“Don’t think you’re free. I’ll report to her when she comes this weekend.”

“Shut up,” she laughs and grabs a bottle of water from the fridge. “So, tell me…why don’t you look happy then?”

“I don’t want to sound like a child, but did you see Archer in the pool?”

Elle takes a sip of water and nods. “Yes, he’s with Salma—oh.” Her eyes widen, and she purses her lips. “He’s with Salma. Oh boy.”

“How come he never spends that much time with me?” I ask. “He plays with Salma and Peach. Then he takes walks with Paris. He doesn’t do any of that with me.”

“Come on, Rosie. He went to the shop with you today.”

“Because Luke asked him to,” I say, stubbornly refusing to see reason. “He only spends time with me out of necessity.”

“To be fair, Paris also asked him to walk her out yesterday.”

“Elle!” I snap. “Keep up.”

“Okay, sorry, sorry.” She finishes the rest of her bottled water and flings the bottle into the bin. “Honestly, I think he’s just having fun, Rose. You don’t want to be the girl that stops her man from having fun.”

“I know. But that’s not what I’m doing. I’m just miserable that he’s more comfortable with the other ladies than with me. I think it’s because they’re more his type.”

“Really?” Elle looks at me with interest. “I’m not aware Archer has a type. What’s his type?”

“Duh. Isn’t it obvious? He likes confident, outgoing city women.”

“What does that even mean?” Elle scrunches her face.

“Which part?”

“‘City women’? Do you mean women who live in the city? Or is that a trendy term for something else? It’s hard to keep up these days.
