“Look, captain, I want to get off this rock as badly as you, but what you’re proposing… it’s almost certainly suicide,” Hector said as he rested his elbows on the edge of the table.

“Maybe,” Vincente allowed as he looked at the gathered mercenaries and crew. Even Kamol, who normally abhorred group meetings, was watching, albeit from the doorway near engineering. “But sitting here, waiting for whatever else is out there, is definitely suicide.”

Nobody could meet his gaze and deny the truth. The weather on Gorgon IV had grown steadily warmer throughout the day, which Jasmine had finally pegged at forty standard hours. Twenty of daylight, and twenty of darkness, she told them. The hotter it became outside, the warmer the interior of the Fancy became. Water, which they had plenty of, would be used much faster if they stayed inside the ship. The Aardvark, while not nearly as safe as the Fancy, was better powered and somewhat cooler.

The fact remained, though that they were going to die on the Gorgon IV unless they did something. The planet was more than living up to its moniker as Murder World, and although Vincente was loathe to admit it, he had made a huge mistake. Blundering into a dangerous situation was one thing, but allowing oneself to be blinded by greed and ignoring all of the dangers willfully was another matter in itself. He had brought this onto his crew and the mercenaries, and he was ultimately responsible for everything, which could or had already happened to them. For the time being, though…

None of them wanted to die, not on this forsaken planet. Vincente knew this, and used it to his advantage. He had to because he had no other choice. “You don’t want to die, despite your pretty words about to the end. I know, because I’ve been delaying my meeting with St. Peter for the longest time. In order to do that, though, we need to think outside of the box. And while I’m all for blowing up the Fancy to hurt one of these creatures, I really don’t want her death to be for nothing. She’s been a good ship.”

“Not to mention the amount of money that you’ve put into the electronics and weaponry out of your own pocket,” Jasmine chimed in helpfully.

“And that,” Vincente allowed. “I’d hate to see all that money be wasted on something small.”

“But… that much distance, in the Aardvark alone, just to look at some ships which may have the part we need to steal a secret military ship–”

“Salvage, Hector,” Vincente corrected the mercenary. “This has become a salvage operation.”

“Fine,” Hector nodded. “Salvage a secret military ship that was designed to kidnap a god worshipped by one of humanity’s greatest enemies and get off a planet that, if you believe the legends, nobody ever has.”

“Somebody has gotten off this planet,” Jasmine interjected.

“How do you know that?” Yolo asked.

“Because the military knew enough to send in a ship that was already built for this sort of thing,” she explained.
