Skylie slowly chewed on the hard piece of stale bread her captor had given her. Her hands were bound in front of her, and it was awkward both to eat and to drink the tepid water she was offered from time to time. She was told sheâd get a decent meal when she disclosed the location of the money taken from the bank robbery.
She was also told she would suffer the same fate as her brother did if she didnât cooperate. Several times, she desperately told her livid captor, âI would tell you if I knew. But I donât know.â
That only got her a swift kick to the ribs and another to her tightly bound legs. A couple of times she was even kicked in the head. She had passed out on two different occasions and awoke with no idea how long sheâd been unconscious. At this point, she had no idea what day it was, let alone what time of day.
She didnât know where she was, although she was quite sure she was on the South Island. Unless sheâd been taken by ferry across the channel while she was unconscious, she was somewhere within a few hoursâ drive of the TopHouse. She remembered much of the ride, but she had no idea the direction her captor had driven her. Sheâd been bound and forced into the backseat but had been unable to sit up. Sheâd tried to decipher the general direction of travel, but with all the twists and turns in the road, she was soon totally disoriented. Still, she felt that the odds of her captor taking her across the channel were slim. She couldnât imagine how that could have been done without raising suspicion unlessâshe might have been left in the car when it was driven onto the ferry and no one would have been the wiser. Suddenly she wasnât so sure she was on the South Island. She could be anywhere in the entire country.
She had been moved a couple of times while unconscious. Both of the times she awoke, the immediate surroundings were different. Currently, she was in a dark, dank place she thought might be a basement. Once she had been in a bedroom. She assumed it was a bedroom because it had a bed and a dresser. But the blinds were drawn, and she couldnât see outside at all, no matter how much she squirmed. Nor had she been allowed to lie on the bed, just the cold, filthy floor.
The first place she had been taken had appeared to be a kitchen, but not one in current use. Sheâd been bound to the leg of a heavy wooden table. She hadnât once seen a bathroom in any of the three locations but was forced to use a bucket when the need arose, which it didnât much anymore, as sheâd had so little in the way of food or water.
The pain she was suffering was intense. She hurt from the times sheâd been kicked by leather-booted feet.
