As soon as Brash left for work the next morning, Madison called her grandmother.

“If it’s not too early, I think I’ll swing by for a cup of coffee.”

“You know I’ve already finished a pot by now,” Granny Bert assured her. “But I’ll be glad to put on another.”

“Maybe Miss Virgie would like to join us?”

She heard the excited uptick in her grandmother’s voice. “You’re working on something, aren’t you? Should I call Wanda and Sybil, too?”

“Not just yet. I’ll be there in about ten minutes.”

“If it takes you ten minutes to get here, you must be walking.”

“No, but I thought clothes might be nice. See you then.”

Miss Virgie arrived only a few minutes after Madison. The older woman carried a plate of assorted breads and sweets with her, no doubt remnants of her overzealous love for holiday baking.

“I made bacon to offset the sweet,” Granny Bert said, sliding a small platter onto the middle of the table.

Over their impromptu breakfast, Granny Bert asked what Madison wanted to talk about.

“I’m worried about Genny and this investigation. Brash didn’t come out and say it, but I think she may be their prime suspect at this point.”

“At this point,” Granny Bert stressed. “It’s only been a day and a half. Way too soon to jump to conclusions.”

“We can’t ignore the fact that Genny’s knife was sticking out of Anastasia’s dead body.”

“Have they determined what time she died? And what she actually died of?” Miss Virgie asked.

“If they have, I don’t know about it. And probably won’t, for that matter.”

“I guess this new hoopla about Myrna doesn’t help, either.”

There was no need in wondering if they had heard. Her grandmother was like some all-knowing, all-seeing, all-hearing superpower. Nothing happened in The Sisters that escaped her attention.

“I’m sure it made matters worse. Shilo Dawne’s accusations from the ball are unconfirmed, since no one actually heard or saw anything happen. But apparently, everyone in the restaurant heard what took place yesterday. Even if it didn’t happen the way Myrna claimed, Genny did goad her and said things she shouldn’t have said.”

“In her defense,” Granny Bert said, “she was dealing with Myrna. That woman could make a nun lose her temper. Her religion, too!”

“I don’t think anyone would argue with you, but that doesn’t help Genny.”

“So, what will?” Miss Virgie wanted to know. “What can we do to help her?”

“I know Brash told us to stay away from this,” Madison began.

“Which, he knew we wouldn’t,” her grandmother butted in.

“Of course not. And I know Miss Blond Bombshell is head of the case and will check things out on her own, but it won’t hurt for us to launch our own quiet little investigation.” She looked innocently at the ceiling, musing aloud as she drummed her fingers. “If only someone had officially hired me to prove Genny’s innocence. That way, I would be obligated to check things out on my client’s behalf.”

“Consider yourself hired!” Granny Bert said. “Virgie, you’ll have to do the honors on this one. Brash told me to stay out of it, but you weren’t in on the lecture.
