CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

THE RACE IS ON

Lola knew there was a race now, a race to prove Tony was innocent before the rot set in and his life was truly destroyed. Maybe, if she could prove his innocence quickly, then the news would blow over and he would get his job back. People would once again see him as the good man he was.

“Why so sad?” Sassy asked as they walked back along the street.

“Some horrible people have told lies about Tony. Now other people think he is bad and it means he has lost his job.”

“Then he can come walking with us more often,” Sassy said turning her head and giving a big smile.

“If only it was that easy.” Lola felt as if she had let him down. Maybe, if she had found John Smith quicker, then this would never have got quite so out of hand.

“People funny, anyone can smell that Tony is not bad.” Sassy was trotting along the path in front of them. To her, the matter was closed. Tony was a good man, she could tell it and she couldn’t comprehend how complicated things could get. Once again, Lola envied the little dog.

Lola decided to go back to Tanya’s house so she could talk to Wayne. Maybe he could find something out for her. As they passed the church, she saw Father Jackson changing the timing in the noticeboard.

“Good morning, Father,” Lola said.

He turned and it was obvious that he was struggling to sleep. However, he put a smile on his face. “Good morning, Lola, and little Sassy, how are you doing?”

“We have just been to see Tony. I feel awful for him, is there anything you can do?”

The priest shook his head. “I wish that there was. I know that Tony didn’t do this but he is hiding something. I’ve felt it for a while and at first, I thought it was a good thing because he often had a smile on his face. Recently, however, I worry about what it could be.”

Lola felt the familiar excitement in her gut when she recognized something important. “When did you first notice this?”

“It was not long after he got Tyson. At first, I thought it was the dog making him so happy. He was also so busy and his car was out a few nights. I guess I just thought he was out with the dog but now I’m not so sure.”

“Do you have any idea what it could be?” Lola asked.

“No, I know he didn’t kill Alexander Petrov, but I get the awful feeling that he’s lying about where he was on the night of the murder. What could it mean?”

“I don’t know, but do me a favor, do not mention this to anyone if you can help it.” Lola wanted to say especially to Daniel Peterson. However, she realized that the priest couldn’t hide this fact if he was directly asked.

“Don’t worry, I believe in Tony and I will do what I feel is best for him.
