Author Sleeps, Wakes, “Finds” Novel
BELLE AIRE, IND., Feb. 25 (UPI) George “Bingo” Pompson, a noted novelist and writer on the “ecology of athletics,” as he puts it, had a strange story to tell yesterday. Pompson says that he woke Tuesday after his usual mid-afternoon “nap” to find the manuscript of a novel waiting for him on his study desk.
“It’s all there,” Mr. Pompson marveled, “I mean it’s complete in every detail.” Mr. Pompson, who won the Clint Hartung Prize in 1961 for Jock Yocks, his study of athlete humor, insisted that no one could have got into his study during his nap. “The door is always locked,” he grinned, “and there’s no window.” The celebrated author assured a curious visitor that the novel is a fine job of writing. “It’s meticulously plotted, interesting, suspenseful—and even rather poetically written.” The slender scribe, who admitted that he has been thinking about a novel along the same lines, cannot explain how the novel came to be written on his own typewriter. “Even the revisions are in my hand,” he mused, but insisted that he “did not write a word of it.”
What is even more puzzling to the writer is that several of the characters in the “found” novel are characters who appeared in Cellophane Soldier, a novel that appeared to mixed reviews six years ago. “I can’t explain the darn thing,” Pompson chuckled.
The author concluded by saying that he would give the manuscript a title, have it retyped, and mail it off to his agent in New York. “I figure it’s mine,” he said. “I’m not even going to revise it.”
Mr. Pompson declined to reveal what the novel was about except to say that it had to do with “lust and murder.”
