We spent the rest of the afternoon going through the piles of Wayneâs belongings on her bed. If I didnât just pick her up from the hospital, Iâd never know she was just there. She spends a lot of the time interrogating me about what Noah and I did last night. Iâm happy to tell her about the card game âKings in the Cornerâ he taught me; surprisingly, she knows it. After a light dinner, we play a few games. I have to teach her the knocking rule, which she gets a kick out of.
After our third game, her mood shifts, and she turns sober. âNow that you and Noah have finished with the cars, would you mind terribly if I invited you two over once in a while to visit? Maybe for dinner sometime?â
âWhat do you mean? Weâre not finished.â The loneliness buried in her question claws at me. Iâm starting to grow attached to this woman, and I canât imagine us disappearing from her life. âWe still need to have the valuations completed, then Iâll need to see what Mischief Motors wants to do, if anything, with them. And if weâre going to sell any to outside buyers, weâll need to handle that too. You canât be rid of us that easily.â
âOh, well, when you put it like that, I guess Iâll be seeing a lot of you.â The relief is clear in the relaxing of her shoulders, and my heart constricts a little bit more. Itâs got to be so horrible for her to live alone after being with her husband for so many years. She has her cats, but thatâs not enough. The melancholy behind her small smile is so heartbreaking I just want to wrap her in a giant hug.
âYup. Youâre going to end up sick of us in no time.â
âWell, I look forward to getting sick of you.â
âOh, and donât forget Noah kind of has his heart set to stay on as your permanent landscaper, too.â
âYou two are so kind and so good to me. I donât know what Iâd do without you.â Her eyes fill up with tears, and I give in and pull her into a hug. She feels so tiny and frail. So fragile she could break with a deep breath.
âDonât even think about it.â I rub her back lightly as she pulls herself together. âWeâre here for you. Whatever you need.â
