We spent the rest of the afternoon going through the piles of Wayne’s belongings on her bed. If I didn’t just pick her up from the hospital, I’d never know she was just there. She spends a lot of the time interrogating me about what Noah and I did last night. I’m happy to tell her about the card game ‘Kings in the Corner’ he taught me; surprisingly, she knows it. After a light dinner, we play a few games. I have to teach her the knocking rule, which she gets a kick out of.

After our third game, her mood shifts, and she turns sober. “Now that you and Noah have finished with the cars, would you mind terribly if I invited you two over once in a while to visit? Maybe for dinner sometime?”

“What do you mean? We’re not finished.” The loneliness buried in her question claws at me. I’m starting to grow attached to this woman, and I can’t imagine us disappearing from her life. “We still need to have the valuations completed, then I’ll need to see what Mischief Motors wants to do, if anything, with them. And if we’re going to sell any to outside buyers, we’ll need to handle that too. You can’t be rid of us that easily.”

“Oh, well, when you put it like that, I guess I’ll be seeing a lot of you.” The relief is clear in the relaxing of her shoulders, and my heart constricts a little bit more. It’s got to be so horrible for her to live alone after being with her husband for so many years. She has her cats, but that’s not enough. The melancholy behind her small smile is so heartbreaking I just want to wrap her in a giant hug.

“Yup. You’re going to end up sick of us in no time.”

“Well, I look forward to getting sick of you.”

“Oh, and don’t forget Noah kind of has his heart set to stay on as your permanent landscaper, too.”

“You two are so kind and so good to me. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Her eyes fill up with tears, and I give in and pull her into a hug. She feels so tiny and frail. So fragile she could break with a deep breath.

“Don’t even think about it.” I rub her back lightly as she pulls herself together. “We’re here for you. Whatever you need.”
