CHAPTER 17
Standing outside Major Bergâs office, Peggy straightened the belted jacket of her dress uniform. She would be taken more seriously if she werenât decked out like a clown in her oversized zoot suit. Her disobedience in not disclosing the note she picked up in Cuba would likely change his fondness for her, but this was the right thing to do. If soldiers were in danger, she couldnât sit by doing nothing because her feelings might get hurt.
She held the desk sergeantâs gaze. âIâm here to see Major Berg. I donât have an appointment, but it is urgent.â
With an armload of folders, Sergeant Miller tipped his head. âGo on in. Heâs expecting you.â He headed down the corridor.
She crinkled her eyebrows. Expecting her? That couldnât be right. She went to the door and knocked.
âCome in.â
She smoothed her hands down her painstakingly pressed wool-gabardine skirt before opening the door.
The major stood from his seat behind the desk. âCome in. Close the door.â
Why didnât he seem surprised to see her? Her insides tightened. Did he know? When she turned to shut the door, she saw the reason. Jolene and Brownie sat in chairs off to the side.
Jolene gave a forced smile. âWe figured you would try to come without us, so we arrived early.â
Brownie nodded.
How had they known when she would come? Irrelevant.
The major motioned toward the chair directly across from his desk. âPlease have a seat.â
She would rather stand, given the circumstances.
He shifted his weight. âPlease.â
She remembered his leg injury and sat. Fortunately he hadnât ordered her.
He retook his seat and laced his hands together. âNow tell me what this is all about.â
She glanced at her comrades. âThey didnât tell you, sir?â
He shook his head. âThey said you were the pilot of this presentation. It must be interesting if they donât want to be left out.â
Interesting wasnât the word Peggy would use to describe it. âItâs not a presentation, sir. It might be nothing at all.â She hoped it was nothing, because then three menâs lives wouldnât be in danger.
âIt has to be something, or you wouldnât have come to me, and the three of you wouldnât look as though youâd been caught swiping an extra cookie.â
It was slightly more important than a cookie. If it was real. âWhile in Cuba, I overheard something.â
His expression hardened. âAnd you failed to disclose this information during the debriefing?â
The disappointment in his gray eyes crushed her.
She knew now that concealing this had been the wrong thing to do. âSir, I wasnât sure it was important. You have to understand, soldiers try to trick the female pilots all the time. If they can make us look bad, humiliate us, or discourage us, they will at every opportunity.â
âAs Second Lieutenant Rosbach had?â
âThat was worse.â Her anger flared. âThat could have killed WASP Brown.â She glanced at her friend. âAs it is, she has been banned from flying because of her injury.â
âWhen she heals fully, sheâll be in the air again.â
âIf they let her, sir.â More than likely they would use this to permanently ground her.
