It was just after ten the next morning, and I was eating a scrambled egg at the kitchen table when Mike arrived at the door.
âDonât you have a job?â I asked.
He pushed the screen open and stepped inside, looking pleased with himself. He was wearing a short-sleeved shirt printed with fern leaves, gray linen pants, and huaraches. âVery tropical,â I observed.
âI was hoping to catch you in your robe.â
âYouâre in luck,â I said. âI just got out of the shower. My hairâs still wet.â
âI see that,â he said. âMay I have coffee?â
âHelp yourself,â I said.
He filled a mug and turned to me, leaning on the counter. âI went in for a couple of hours and got the clerks set up for the day.â
âDid you find out the name of the town?â
âI did,â he said. âItâs San Bosco. Just south of Port Louis.â
âIâve been on that coast, but Iâve never heard of it,â I said.
âItâs a village. Maybe six hundred people. About a three-hour drive.â
âYou want to go now?â
âWhenever youâre ready.â
I finished my egg. Mimi was upstairs; I could hear the water running in the bathroom. Charlotte was coming in early. They could manage without me, but I hated to ask them. âI canât just walk away whenever I feel like it.â
âIf we leave soon,â he said, âwe can be back before you close.â
I pushed my chair from the table. âLet me go talk to Mimi,â I said. âIâll see if sheâs willing.â
As I climbed the stairs, I considered my offer. Time was as important as money to Mimi. Iâd give her the weekend off with a base pay. I heard the shower cut off, and I went to my room to get dressed. This time, I would be more casual: white silk slacks, a black cotton blouse, my favorite red sandals. I pulled on my underpants and wrestled my breasts into a bra. I heard the bathroom door open, and Mimi, wrapped in a towel, passed my bedroom door. She glanced in at me and paused. âWhatâs going on?â she asked.
âHeâs here,â I said. âWeâre going to the village where he thinks Ian and Carità are.â
âYou want me to open,â she conjectured.
âI donât like to ask,â I said.
âItâs okay,â she said. âI donât have any classes today.â
âIâll give you the weekend off, with pay,â I said.
âThat would be great,â she said. âBut you donât have to do it.â
âI wonât feel right if I donât,â I said. âI donât know when Iâll get back tonight.â
âIf Iâve got the whole weekend off, you can stay all night with my blessing.â
I was pulling on my slacks. âThanks,â I said. âThat could happen.â
She leaned in the doorway, watching me dress. âDo you think youâll find them right away?â
âItâs a fishing village,â I said. âSix hundred people. Carità is not a woman who goes unnoticed.â
âThatâs true,â she said.
I buttoned the blouse, stopped at the mirror to run a brush through my hair, and spritzed my bosom with cologne. âIâm off,â I said.
Mimi turned back to her room while I hustled down the stairs, examining the contents of my purse as I went.
