Chapter 10
Nick
Thereâs a vehicle rattling up the dirt track in my direction. My stupid heart trips over itself with my first thought, âOh, Juliaâs back againâ. And I instantly feel ridiculous. Why was that woman the first thought in my head? I shake it away. But I stand up and leave my notes and laptop to see if it is Julia back again.
This, whatever-it-is, is the most idiotic thing that has ever happened to me. My simple life of me, myself and I, has worked out pretty alright so far. But for some reason, my normally functioning mind cannot get my heart to understand that this woman, who I am forced to work with, is not really my wife or someone I should be remotely attracted to. And here I am thinking about her again! Itâs maddening. I am someone who just likes to work, ride my Harley, and leave all personal entanglements to other people. My illogical, unscientific borderline obsession with Julia is unproductive and inconvenient.
Although, I did still feel bad about teasing her. The picnic joke, I admit, was insensitive and unfunny. And my inappropriate comments about our fake marriage somehow not being fake, well, Iâm not at all surprised she stormed off, hating me. I just felt that there was something more⦠real? Maybe I am imagining things, but that kiss was not a âbuddyâ kiss. No way. But I clearly blew it when I suggested that... Oh, never mind. And then, my idea of a relaxing day on the boat to, somehow, prove I was a nice guy? Well, it started out as fun. And I enjoyed hanging out with Max. Heâs a cool kid. Julia seemed so happy and chilled. Gosh, she has a beautiful smile. She really is a stunning woman. Anyway, my plan for a nice day, cruising around my neck of the woods, fell flat when I mentioned my research paper submission. That turned into a big fat issue. Yes, I probably should have told Julia about it, but as yet, thereâs nothing solid to go on. So why bother getting anxious? It probably won't even get approval. State legislation is notoriously slow. They get hundreds of submissions every day. And there are a number of hoops to jump through. If and when I hear something, Iâll be sure to pass it on. But I can kind of see her point. Kind of.
I wander over to the window and lift the blind to see if that tiresome woman, who is occupying my thoughts, is wearing shorts again today, with her unruly hair flowing around her face. Disappointingly, itâs not Juliaâs car that is pulling to a stop, under the shade tree, this time. I donât recognize it, but it looks menacing. Two men get out and take their time to saunter over to the front steps. I keep watching. One of them looks familiar, but I canât place him, straight off. I open the front door before they knock.
âGood morning, Mr Anderson,â says one of the men, casually taking off his sunglasses.
