Chapter Fourteen
â¡
In the cottage, Hallie greeted Wilbur with a lackluster pat, plunked onto the sofa and poured out her woes to him. âI just threw myself at Owen and he tossed me back. Why did Pearl and I open that second bottle of wine?â
The lab woofed in sympathy.
âYes, I knowâheâs an honorable guy. I should count myself lucky for that.â
She didnât. Could a person implode from unsatisfied physical longing?
Damn the man for putting her in this state.
Hallie attempted to comb her fingers through her hair, but couldnât for the massive snarls and tangles. God only knew what she looked like. She pushed to her feet and made for the bathroom.
Standing before the vanity mirror, she stared at her reflection with horror. The curls sheâd straightened this morning had become a ratâs nest of ugly. She could be the poster girl for an out-of-control hair ad. Owen had warned her about riding in the convertible without a head scarf. That she hadnât listened and only now realized this proved his pointâshe was intoxicated.
She opened the medicine cabinet and retrieved her brush. Working it through the knots proved impossible. Copious amounts of curl relaxer helped.
How could Owen possibly want her when she looked like this?
And yet, he did.
Grooming forgotten she sank against the counter, closed her eyes and relived the steamy moments in the dark. His ravenous mouth, both demanding and giving. The fiery kisses down the side of her neck, his tongue on her skin and his big, hot hands on her breastsâ¦
The brush clattered to the floor, putting an abrupt end to her erotic memories. Frowning, she retrieved it. Midnight was just around the corner and Wilbur never slept in. She needed to take care of her hair and get some sleep. No more thinking about Owen or his kisses.
Thanks to the relaxer her brush triumphed. She looked almost normalâat least her visible parts. Inside, she was a seething mass of desire.
Determined to ignore her feelings she changed into an old tank top and boy shorts she favored on hot summer nights. She fell into bed and turned out the lamp on the bedside table.
As always, Wilbur made himself comfy on his doggie bed nearby. He settled down right away. Hallie, not so much. Despite fatigue, the alcohol buzz, and her resolve to steer clear of all thoughts of Owen, her rebellious mind raced with possibilities and what-ifs.
Yes, he wanted her, but did that mean getting to know her better, as in dating? Or was the attraction solely about sex?
Even if they dated heâd made it clear he wasnât looking for a serious relationship. Between his parentsâ bad marriage and his own, Hallie didnât blame him. Or want anything deep herself. It felt too risky.
What did she want? More than a casual fling, although Hallie wasnât sure what that meant. For some reason, trying to figure it out scared her. She moved on.
The way she felt now, she was strongly tempted to toss caution to the wind and let what happened happen.
