Chapter Thirteen

I caught sight of Azazael striding toward us as I made a mental note to ask either Leviathan or Ashtoreth before I left what it meant that the demon was killing to collect souls, and why it was forbidden. Azazael sneered at me as he stopped near Belial.

“Ok, that’s all I wanted,” I said, getting ready to leave.

“What did you want?” Azazael asked.

“To lay eyes on you. If you’re here, you aren’t on Earth,” I said.

“Why would I be on Earth?” Azazael asked.

“Because I don’t trust you,” I replied. “Thank you, Belial.”

“Exorcist, if you find this demon and it is one of mine, I would like you to inform me of it,” Belial said.

“Me as well,” Beelzebub added. I considered their request. I didn’t know if hell princes could kill demons, but it seemed likely, and I wasn’t sure I wanted the demon killed by Belial or Beelzebub.

“I will agree only if you promise to tell me if you find them,” I responded. “Also, I will tell you that if I find them on Earth, I will kill them.”

“Understood.” Belial nodded.

“Ashtoreth is correct, this isn’t just an Earth problem. This has huge ramifications in the Stygian as well. I propose a temporary truce between Lucifer’s allies and us,” Beelzebub said.

“Perhaps it’s because I wasn’t told what is going on, but I will not agree to a truce,” Azazael said.

“I agree to it,” Belial said. “As long as you reside in my territory, you will abide by the terms we set, Cambion.” Belial turned large dark eyes on Azazael.

“Exorcist, the cambion you brought to Lucifer, can you describe it for us?” Beelzebub asked. “If we know what it looks like we might have a better chance of tracking down the father.”

“I will do one better,” I said, and opened a portal and sent magic toward Lucifer. I had no doubt he knew we were here. It took maybe 30 seconds for Lucifer to come through the portal holding the cambion I had brought down. As he held it, my mouth fell open.

“It’s yours!” I said to Lucifer in complete amazement. I hadn’t noticed the resemblance until I could see it in close proximity to Azazael.

“That’s not possible. I cannot return to Earth without your help,” Lucifer replied. However, he saw the resemblance to Azazael as well. His face changed, as if he were in great pain. Then I had another realization; the mother of the cambion had to be Lilith. The resemblance was too close to Azazael to have a different mother.

“Oh God,” Raphael said. “How?”

“Lilith is dead, isn’t she?” I asked.

“Yes,” Gabriel replied, and there was quiet for a long time from both demons and angels. They all stared at Lucifer and the cambion he held. Somehow Xerxes was the child of Lilith and Jophiel. But Lilith had been dead for more than a millennium and Jophiel was now the king of the Stygian and sterile like the rest of his demons.

“We should go,” Raphael said.

“Wait, we must negotiate the terms of the truce,” Beelzebub said.
