AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT WAY OF USING THE SAME EXACT MUSCLES

Imagine you are holding something in your hand. In this case, the muscles just above an area are responsible for holding the weight just below. Your fingers are loaded with the weight of the object; your wrist is loaded with the weight of the fingers and the object; the lower arm carries the weight of the hand, fingers, and object; and so on, all the way up the shoulder. But if we reverse this so that your hand is holding on to a bar and your body dangles below, these same muscles now carry everything below. Those same muscles of the wrist—the ones formerly loaded with the combined weight of the object and hand—are now bearing the load of the entire weight of the body (minus the hand, of course).

It is likely your tissues reflect your lack of regularly holding your body weight on your arms, throughout your life. Which isn’t to say that you couldn’t go hang right now, but that if you did, the microtrauma and the way you execute the hang on the cellular level would be different than it would had you been hanging throughout your life.
