Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?

MENTAL TRAINING PRINCIPLES

1. Know Thyself.

Knowing who you are is a moving target because each day life teaches you something new about yourself. The practice of yoga is designed to mine the gems of your soul and help you find ways to activate them in your life.

Imagine someone with very little self-knowledge. I see them as a human with sharp edges and little bits of explosives hidden in the cracks. When someone does or says something that they don’t agree with, they blow up. Yoga can smooth out your rough edges by teaching you to keep your cool in challenging poses. This capacity then translates to other situations in your life.

The deeper your self-knowledge, the easier it can be to align and heal all the parts of you. Those parts include your joints, muscles, and organs. They also include your pain, your worldview, your emotions, fears, and dreams. To become whole, you must dedicate yourself to self-study and continue doing the daily work to become better friends with yourself.

2. Align Your Mind.

Thinking, speaking, and moving are all very different forms of interacting with the world, but they are all driven from the same command center. Our mind is the holder of our ideas, words, and dance steps.

Due to the vast nature of what we contain as humans, it’s easy to get lost in any one aspect of who we are or what we do. We all know someone who is super introverted and can spend hours “in their head.” Or we have a friend who talks without thinking. Or maybe worse: a friend who acts without thinking.

Yogis dedicate themselves to aligning the three dimensions of thoughts, words, and actions in order to attain harmony and balance with themselves and the outside world.

3. The Mind Changes First.

It takes seven to ten years for the cells in our bodies to regenerate, with the exception of our brain cells: In adult brains, most neurons change their connections with other neurons rather than regrowing, and the electrochemical impulses that signal between them take approximately one millisecond to travel.

With speeds like that, in a full day of new thoughts and ideas we can have drastic shifts in our brains and our lives. Even though our bodies take years to physically change, our minds do not; what we believe can change in a millisecond.

As much as life can be predictable, it is also built on dichotomies, extremes, and paradoxes. We can use this to our advantage by shifting how we see the world and how quickly and often we allow ourselves to evolve our beliefs.

MENTAL TRAINING PRACTICES

These practices are designed to bring awareness to and shift your mental habits. Carve out a little bit of time to spend with each practice and keep them in your back pocket. The more frequently you incorporate these, the easier it will become for you to change your mind, say what you mean, and let your actions spring forth from a place of alignment with your thoughts and words.
