There are many reasons for climbing a mountain. Some demand attention for their height, others for their fame and a select few because they’re just so beautiful they are impossible to ignore. Yr Aran is one of the latter, a pin-up peak which flaunts itself on calendars and postcards. Its perfect pyramid sits at the end of Llyn Gwynant, beckoning you on. Although officially part of the Snowdon massif, at 747m (2451ft) it is a relative tiddler compared to its loftier siblings, and its position, aloof from the rest of the family, means that it is seldom included in most walkers’ visits to the main group. They have bigger and more dramatic fish to fry. If you meet another walker on Yr Aran is it because they have been seduced by its perfect shape: they want to be there.
