Above is a 1914 Washington School class. Shown are, in no particular order, (first row) Edna French, Elsie Von Garrett, Clara Nesbit, Lucy Scheels, Mamie Kessler, Florence Legget, Esther Carrol, Marion Earl, Gertrude Vinton, Tillie Kessler, Alma Hoerst, and Hattie Von Garrett; (second row) Libbie Goodwin, Winifred Warner, Alice Fleichman, Rosie Hickey, Maggie Matern, Julia Weber, Grace Pank, Mamie Wilkey, Elsie Reid, May Havey, Annie Walker, and unidentified; (third row) George Bernara, David Emmeluth, Willie Pirus, Everett Sheridan, Henry VanEss, Willie Murphy, Willie Wachkau, Allen Marsh, unidentified, John Gagg, Joseph Ryan, Theodore Crolly, Harry Bonn, Herbert Kerr, and ? Slagel. Nathan Hale School was three block south on Sixth Avenue. Shown below is Henry Small’s 1961 sixth-grade graduating class. These students entered Washington Junior High School that fall. Both were southside neighborhood schools. In the 47 years separating these two photographs, the increased ethnic diversity within the community and school is evident.
