challenging training activities designed by Greg (see Chapter 9, pp. 117–27). On the last day of the season, Barnsborough were ready for their re-match with the crack Victoria Road team. Victoria Road won the toss and decided to bat. The batters were quickly into their stride and looking to pick up singles off the accurate Barnsborough bowling. However, this time the Barnsborough fielders were much more alert to the tactics of the batters and after an attempted quick single resulted in a near miss run-out the Victoria Road batters were aware of how well Barnsborough were fielding and were a little more cautious. However, Victoria Park were still good at finding the gaps and ended up with a score of 120 off 40 overs. In reply, Barnsborough started well, working the ball into gaps and scoring at three runs an over. The Victoria Road bowlers and fielders were not accustomed to being put under so much pressure and a few wild throws resulted in welcome extra runs from overthrows. The bowlers began to panic and tried to bowl too fast resulting in more boundary scoring opportunities. However, Victoria Road fought hard and Barnsborough needed one run to win off the last ball of the game. James was facing as the ball was bowled on a good length. He stepped forward, adjusted the line of his shoulders to present the face of the bat, and placed the ball into the gap between square leg and midwicket and scampered through for the winning run. The team were jubilant and huddled around Greg for a quick debrief. “Hey Greg,” said James, “we won it with a nurdle to leg!” All the team fell about laughing, while Greg allowed himself a contented smile and noted that his team had scored 42% of their runs in singles compared with the 35% of the Victoria Road team.
