If you’re micromanaging an employee because they’ve let you down in the past, you’re actually making the problem worse. Instead of labeling the person as a failure, you need to realize that your actions may have contributed to the problem. Meet with the individual (at a neutral time and place) to discuss the issues and decide what the employee does well and not so well. Then agree on a performance goal and commit to open communication.

Letting the Task Be Boss

Letting the task be the boss is an interesting concept, but what does it mean? Allison explains.

Whenever Allison has a problem on a project or needs a suggestion, she goes to her boss. But instead of just dropping the problem on the manager’s lap, Allison presents three to four possible solutions, lists any pros and cons she can think of, and then solicits her boss’s opinion to add to the mix. And by doing all of that, Allison takes charge of the task of reaching the decision. But her direction comes from the task, not from her manager.

That’s what it means to let the task be the boss.

Your role is to be an advisor — and get out of the way. If you’re standing in the middle of the field shouting orders to all the people you’ve supposedly empowered, then something’s not right.
