Chapter 8

After a delicious night of dreaming about run-a-way horses and a certain daring young man who raced after her and pulled her to safety on his lap, Mariam awoke early Monday morning with a smile on her face and the determination to do something nice for Dillon. Surely he was the most trustworthy man she’d ever met, and her feelings for him had risen above that of only a friend. Not that they should.

As reason jolted her from the warm cocoon of romance that had been swirling around her heart, she frowned and sat up in her bed while she struggled with the possibilities. She could give up her longing for her son. The likelihood of ever finding him was nonexistent just as she’d always known. But no matter how much she tried, would she ever stop thinking of him and wanting him in her arms? Of course not. To do so would be just as hard as forgiving her father for his heartless act that destroyed her life. How could she offer Dillon only half her heart, because surely that’s all she had left? It wouldn’t be fair to him. No, there was no place in her life for marriage and happily ever-afters. Father had stolen that possibility right along with her son when he took him away the night he was born.

Still, Dillon had been wonderful, and she wanted to give him something of Father’s since he admired the man so much. She rose from bed and still in her nightgown went through the house to the second bedroom where she’d stored all of her father’s things. She hadn’t known what to do with it all. His books and papers, especially. She’d given his clothing away, and let Aunt Prudence take a small figurine as a memento. Uncle Joseph accepted the pocket knife she would never use. But everything else remained behind his bedroom’s closed door.

She turned the knob and went in, taking several steps before stopping to look around. A bed took up most of the room, with a dresser and chest of drawers against two other walls. A rocking chair sat in the corner. Her gaze moved to the piles of storage containers stuck in the spaces between furniture. After his funeral, she’d come home and packed everything away, throwing it in crates and barrels without going through any of it. She’d thought with it all out of sight, she could forget the resentment and pain of remembering how he’d treated her. A father should love his child, but she didn’t know how that would feel. Especially after her transgression. Maybe when she was young, when Mama was alive, but she barely remembered those days. Feelings overwhelmed her as she stood in the middle of the small bedroom and for a moment, allowed the memories to return.

The night her baby was born, she’d been so scared. Father threatened to take him away, and she’d been helpless to stop him. Afterward, she’d pleaded with him to return her baby, that she needed him.
