Chapter Twelve

A well-manicured foot was smooshed up against her cheek. Lena blinked slowly, recognizing her living room, but wondering about the foot. She sat up and laughed at Rachel sprawled on the other end of the couch. Her friend’s mouth hung open and a light snore sounded. When Rachel giggled in her sleep and smiled, Lena was sure she was dreaming of Harris.

Moving carefully, Lena extracted herself from the tangle of Rachel’s legs, admiring her pal’s bright orange pedicure and making a note to ask about the polish color. She crawled along the floor between the couch and the coffee table and kneeled at Rachel’s head.

“You are so sexy, Rachel Lorensen,” she whispered, fighting back laughter.

Rachel wiggled in her sleep and rolled to her side, her legs bunching up. “Harris...” she mumbled.

Lena had to clamp a hand over her mouth to keep from exploding into a giggle fit.

“Can we play with your handcuffs, detective?” Lena asked, lowering her voice to sound more like Harris.

“Again?” Rachel murmured around a breathy sigh.

Again? Lena’s eyes bugged and she rose enough to sit on the end of the coffee table. Hey, at least some people are having some fun.

Fun. She’d forgotten what that word was all about until Grady had reminded her. And reminded her. And reminded her. Unfortunately, she’d be bidding that word a farewell once again. She should have stuck to her original policy of no dating, not so much for her own sake this time, but so she wouldn’t have hurt anyone else.

And she’d hurt Grady. His beautiful green eyes had gone all tragic, and it had been her doing.

But it’s got to be this way.

It was in everyone’s best interest if Jase and Grady stayed in separate corners. That couldn’t happen if she pulled the selfish card and kept Grady for herself. Clover’s Fruit and Flower Shoppe would suffer and her business had to come first. It had to. She hadn’t worked hard all these years to see it all crumble.

Rachel snapped awake and nearly fell off the couch.

“Whoa.” Lena grabbed her arm. “Hey, easy there.”

Rachel blinked rapidly, her head swiveling in all directions as her brain processed her location and all the minute details a cop would notice. “We fell asleep on the couch.”

“I think we were actually victims of an ice cream-induced coma, but yeah, it’s morning now.” Lena gathered her hair into a loose ponytail and stretched. “Want breakfast? I have fruit and croissants.”

“Okay. What time is it anyway?”

Lena glanced at the clock near her television. “It’s only 8 a.m. When do you have to be at the station?”

“Always.” Rachel did her own stretch and smoothed her dark hair which looked amazing even after an entire night spent on a lumpy couch. “You?”

“I usually head over to the shop officially by ten, but I always poke around earlier than that.”

“What are your plans for today? Are you going to talk to Jase? Do you need someone with a gun present?” A fierce look entered Rachel’s eyes, and Lena was grateful for such a good friend.
