HOLY ASCENSION CHURCH had a small lot that was already filled. Morelli parked a block and a half from the church and blew out a sigh. âI donât know why I agreed to do this. I should have pulled duty.â
âWeddings are fun.â
âWeddings suck.â
âWhat donât you like about weddings?â
âI have to talk to my relatives.â
âOkay, Iâll concede you that one. What else?â
âI havenât been to church in a year. The Monsignorâs going to assign me to Hell.â
âMaybe youâll see Fred there. I donât think he went to church, either.â
âAnd I have to wear a suit and tie. I feel like my uncle Manny.â
His uncle Manny was a construction expediter. Manny could expedite the completion of a building project by insuring that no unexplained fires would take place during the construction process.
âYou donât look like your uncle Manny,â I said. âYou look very sexy.â I felt the material in his trouser leg. âThis is a beautiful suit.â
His eyes softened. âYeah?â His voice pitched low. âWhy donât we skip the wedding. We could still go to the reception.â
âThe reception isnât for another hour. What would we do?â
He slid his arm along the back of my seat and twirled a curl around his finger.
âNo!â I said, trying to get some conviction behind it.
âWe could do it in the truck. Weâve never done it in the truck.â
Morelli drove a four-wheel drive Toyota pickup. It was pretty nice, but it wasnât going to replace a queen-size bed. And besides, my hair would get mussed. Not to mention I was afraid Bunchy might be watching. âI donât think so,â I said.
He brushed his lips across my ear and told me some of the things he wanted to do to me. A rush of heat fluttered through my stomach. Maybe I should reconsider, I thought. I liked all of those things. A lot.
A mile-long car pulled to the curb behind us.
âDamn,â Morelli said. âItâs my uncle Dominic and aunt Rosa.â
âI didnât know you had an uncle Dominic.â
âHeâs from New York State. And heâs in retail,â Morelli said, opening his door. âDonât ask him too many questions about the business.â
Aunt Rosa was out of the car and running toward us. âJoey,â she yelled. âLet me look at you. Itâs been so long. Look, Dominic, itâs little Joey.â
Dominic ambled up and nodded at Joe. âLong time.â
Joe introduced me.
âI heard you had a girl,â Rosa said, talking to Joe, beaming at me. âItâs about time you settled down. Give your mother more grandchildren.â
âOne of these days,â Joe said.
âYouâre not getting any younger. Pretty soon itâll be too late.â
âItâs never too late for a Morelli,â Joe said.
Dominic made a move like he was going to smack Joe in the head. âWise guy,â he said. Then he smiled.
