Friday 8 : CAL

He had avoided going out all day, but by late afternoon could put it off no longer. He approached the tree warily, dreading being sent back to the day after Clovis’s presumed death. The boy would almost certainly have been found and cut down by then, and there would be things going on there that he did not want to land in the middle of.

But he had to get the album back.

For a good part of the night he’d been plagued by questions, to some of which he’d returned possibilities that had seemed more plausible than they did now, in the full light of day. Such as. If he’d visited a year that predated his birth, and that year was as current to its inhabitants as this year was to him, what was the past if not the present viewed through different eyes, another lens? The present becomes the past in a winking, but suppose a particular fragment of time retains its ‘present’ status forever, like material on a piece of recording tape with specific start and end points: a small enclosed eternity that for some reason is linked to a comparable period sixty years ahead. All right, but why would they be linked? Because something similar happened in each? Moorhens existed in both Junes, of course, but there was only one other major similarity between the two that he could think of. The flooding. Yet there’d been flooding in 1947 too, much worse flooding, so why wasn’t ‘today’ linked to that year? Unless it wasn’t the flooding. Or not the flooding alone. Maybe it was the years themselves, as in ’45 and ’05. The fives? No. No, there had to be something else.

But what?
