CHAPTER 14

“This is brutal!” Charlotte announced as she threw her phone down on the table. “I can’t make one more call. Not when I’m going to get my ass chewed.”

“You’ve only made one call, and that was to Lennon Love,” I said, more than frustrated with my sister. “And while she was unhappy, she hardly chewed your ass.” I rolled my eyes. “She grumbled at the prospect of having to change passwords and put a lock on her credit report. She didn’t threaten to sue us, or leave terrible reviews all over the internet, or even wish that you develop ass boils as penance. All of which I’ve endured over the last hour. But by all means, if you’re done, then don’t make any more calls. I’ll handle it. Just like I always do.”

“Well,” Charlotte said slowly. “That was a bit of a rant, wasn’t it?”

“Charlotte,” I warned, “I’m not in the mood.”

“Obviously. I’m going for a walk.” She got up and strode out of the house without another word.

Jax glanced over at me. “Rough day.”

“The worst,” I agreed. I’d made it through three-quarters of my clients and had been yelled at, threatened, and berated enough to almost make me want to close up shop and head back to LA. But I wouldn’t. I had community in Premonition Pointe. My father, aunt, sister, Jax, Ty and Kennedy, and the coven. That was way too many people to leave behind just because of a blip in my career. Though I had to admit it felt more like a giant boulder.

Still, I wouldn’t give anyone the satisfaction of making me close my doors. I’d built something pretty great, and to give up now would be criminal. What was that saying? This too shall pass? I’d make damned sure of that.

“Why don’t we take a break?” Jax asked, rubbing my shoulders. “Maybe head down to the coffee shop and grab a pastry or two before you finish that list.”

“Thanks,” I said, already shaking my head. “But I really just want to get this done and have it be over. Then I’ll wallow in sugar and full-fat mochas.”

He chuckled softly. “That’s the Marion I know. Let me know if there’s anything I can do.”

I glanced at the kitchen just on the other side of the table. “You know what I’m craving?”

“Sex?” he asked, giving me an exaggerated leer.

“That would be one way to relieve all this stress,” I said with a humorless laugh. “But right now, I’d kill for some shortbread cookies.” Leaning forward, I gave him my best sad puppy-dog expression. “Any chance you’d mind working your magic and whipping some up for me?”

“Cookies? That’s it?” he asked as he made his way to my pantry.

“For now.” I gave him a secret smile, and he promptly returned it.

What I wouldn’t give to just let myself get lost in Jax’s arms. But I had to get through my list of clients. The sooner it was done, the sooner I could start to rebuild relationships. With a heavy sigh, I opened the next file, found the client’s number, and made the next call.
