There was not much more Alex could do. He had called Evelinâs office, her home, then, the LKA. He spoke with Henrik Breiter as well as Strobelsohn. And in between each attempt, he had tried to reach Evelin again on her cell. Without success.
He figured she had her reasons to not pick up her phone.
Suzanne Carstens was, in his opinion, incompetent. Most likely, even dangerous. More than dangerous. Damn, maybe she had even killed her own grandfather.
Evelin was alone with this madwoman. Somewhere. And he could not help.
He decided to wait at home.
Arriving at his apartment, he had to admit that he was worried about Evelin. Now, with all the distractions missing, he became even more aware of it.
He poured himself a whiskey, sat down in his chair, and drank. Half the city knew he was anxious to speak with Evelin. Once they saw or heard from her, they would surely tell her to reach out to him.
The alcohol burned on his palate, but he did not notice it, nor did it seem to calm him down. Alex emptied his glass, put it on the coffee table in front of him, and poured himself another.
After a while, he realized that he was getting tired. The excitement of the day had taken its toll. He looked out the window to his balcony. The storm had increased in strength. Streams of water ran down the glass.
He put his head back slightly and closed his eyes.
Just for a moment, he told himself. Only for a tiny little momentâ¦
He fell asleep.
The dream begins differently than usual. Alex is out on his own balcony, and the rain has suddenly disappeared. He is looking back into the room and at the armchair he had just been sitting in.
All at once, the door opens, and a stranger enters.
Who is this intruder? Alex asks himself.
He sort of remembers the Gore-Tex jacket the stranger is wearing. Heâll have a chance to find out who it is, since the stranger is coming out to join him.
And then Alex recognizes the intruder: it is himself, a younger version of him. Together, they turn and walk to the edge of the balcony and look out over the city. But what he sees is no longer Hamburg. And the vantage point has changed into something he knows ever so well.
Nothing else in the dream changed: the same longitudinal drainage canals and the latitudinal row of shops. It is easy to see from the rooftops, and there are clear-cut passages that one can use to traverse from here to there.
No one looks up at a bazaar. No one pays you any mind. You can move stealthily by, like a sleight of hand. Until you donâtâ¦
The wind wails and howls. Loudly. And even louder still. Alex is no longer on his lookout, but in the middle of the dusty street. He is alone. And the sky is blue. Not a single cloud.
The surrounding houses are ruins. They rise, ghostly, above him. No visible signs of life anywhere, and yet he knows that he is being watched.
