16 - If you wait long enough

Jennifer and crew piled into the old Station Wagon and took off following Eli’s directions. GPS was out of the question since reception was spotty and, besides, half the roads weren’t even mapped. Many were not even paved. Finally they reached the cabin where Joe Hatton and the lawmen still stood, talking.

JOE HAD MORE PRESSING matters than picking up his boy from school. So the time of day didn’t register, but the Station Wagon was vaguely familiar. He said to Langston, “Matt, ain’t that your mama’s old car?”

The Sheriff furrowed his brow. “Yep.” He strode over as the car stopped and Jen got out, followed by the others.

“Dad are you okay?” Jennifer asked, throwing her arms around him.

“I’m fine, Jen. But why did you—“

“Woah!” she exclaimed, leaning back. “You smell like whiskey.” She extricated herself to catch her breath.

Langston shot Joe a look. “Moonshine to be exact.” He turned back to her, noticed his grandkids and smiled wide. “Sarah and Cody?”

“Grandpa!” Sarah went into his arms. Cody moved closer but was not as exuberant.

Matt reached with a long arm and snagged the boys sleeve, pulling him in. He took both in a bear hug. “It’s been too long! You younguns are growing up on me.” They all emerged from the embrace smiling at each other.

Shekinah was next to step into view, Eli hanging back behind her.

“Miss Shekinah? Now I’m worried,” said Joe. “Not that you ain’t welcome. My cabin is yours. I know it’s getting late, but I was about to pick Eli up...” A thought crossed his mind. “Ain’t given you trouble has he?” Joe craned his neck. “Eli, why’re you hiding behind your teacher?”

Shekinah’s expression was serene as she said, “Come on Eli. I don’t think you’re going to keep this a secret.”

When the boy stepped out for all to see, Sorensen and Langston gasped.

Joe studied him a long moment, as if seeing him for the first time, then broke into a huge grin. “Always had your mama’s eyes, now you’ve got her ears too.”

Eli smiled a bit sheepishly. “And don’t forget the eyebrows.”

”It’s him,” whispered Sorensen.

That brought a harsh glance from Shekinah. She gripped her walking cane and raised it an inch from the ground. “Joe, Eli, inside with me a moment.”

Joe nodded and motioned to Eli. To the others he said, “Be just a minute. Y’all stick around if you want to talk more. Or if you need to go, that’s fine too. I can run Shekinah home when she’s ready.”

The Sheriff spoke up as they headed indoors, “ I’ll hang around if it’s all the same. Not used to seeing elves in this part of the country. No offense Eli.” He’d known the boy since Joe had gotten him.

Eli was between Joe and Shekinah, who were not looking back, so he nodded at the Sheriff before stepping inside.
