MAKING PHONE CALLS

Within France

When placing a call to another French phone within France, the 10-digit number will always begin with a zero. Cell phones begin with 06 or 07, and landline prefixes differ depending on the region. In Paris/Île de France, the prefix is 01; in Brest, Cherbourg, Le Havre, Nantes, Orléans, Rouen, and other cities and towns in northwest France, the prefix is 02; in the north and northeast, it’s 03; in the southeast, 04; and in the southwest, 05.

When you need to find the telephone number of an individual or business, use the French version of the yellow and white pages, called pages jaunes and pages blanches, respectively. They operate the same way as back home, including online access. Hard copies are distributed by the nice people at La Poste once a year.
