CONTINUOUS FLUORESCENT

One of my favorite recent discoveries is the use of fluorescent lights; I use Westcott’s Spiderlites. If you like making portraits by window light, you’ll love these—they’re just like windows, except that they’re always available and can be moved to whichever side you want them to be on. Because they are continuous sources (they stay on all the time rather than flashing), they are great for children, who are sometimes scared by flash. Additionally, the lights are not hot, yet they’re bright enough to contract your subjects’ pupils, showing more of the eye color than is possible with the modeling lights on most flashes.

One of my favorite recent discoveries is the use of fluorescent lights. I started using only two lights (in softboxes) and a reflector, as seen in this image.
