The man with a gun had a crazed look in his eyes when he glared at Hope. He wasn’t Jason or the blond thug.

When she’d first heard the sound of footsteps in the house, Hope had thought it was Andrew coming back inside. But something about the intensity of the stomping had caused her not to call out his name.

There was no lock on the guest bedroom door. This intruder had found her easily enough even though she’d hidden in the closet.

Now, he stood over her, gun aimed at her heart.

She backed into a corner, her hands up in a defensive posture. “Please, don’t shoot me.”

Sweat ran down his face as he adjusted the gun in his hand. He spoke haltingly. “You just need to tell me where your brother’s things are...and I will go. I promise.”

The man in front of her was no trained killer like Jason Zimmerman. She thought she saw fear in his eyes, or maybe it was paranoia. All signs indicated he was an addict going through withdrawal. The gun shook in his hand as he licked his lips and glanced around as if someone was going to jump out at him. A man prone to erratic behavior and holding a gun was just as scary as a professional hit man.

“I don’t know where his things are.”

The man’s finger went inside the trigger guard. “You do.”

“Please, if you shoot me, you’ll never find out.”

The man looked sideways for a moment as if thinking about what she had said.

A repeated banging noise caused them both to jump. Someone was trying to get into the house. The doors must be locked. That man wasn’t completely out of it if he had the foresight to do that.

“You’re coming with me.” He lunged at her.

She angled to get away but in the small space between the bed and the closet, there was nowhere to go. He grabbed her arm above the elbow, squeezing tight, pulled her forward and pressed the gun into her back.

The banging continued.

“Get going, now.” He pushed the gun against her spine while ushering her into the living room toward the front door.

She remembered the broken kitchen window. If she cried out, Andrew might be able to hear her. The man might shoot her on the spot, though.

She waited until they were at the front door, and he had twisted the deadbolt and unlocked the knob. She needed to create a distraction. She doubled over and clutched her stomach. “I think I’m going to be sick.”

The man withdrew the gun.

She grabbed a lamp on the entryway table and swung it at him. Crying out in pain, he bent over. She hit him again, but he didn’t fall to the ground. While he recovered, she had a few seconds of delay before he could react.

She threw the lamp at his head and ran for the cover of the couch. She saw the folly in her plan. If she yelled at Andrew that the front door was open, the assailant would simply relock it.
