CHAPTER FOUR

OLIVIA

‘This is it.’ I call out, finally dragging myself out of my wayward thoughts when I see Bailey’s house coming into view on my left. ‘I should be good here, mom.’ I say, turning my attention towards her. When she pulls up and kills the engine I see she’s watching me with anod expression on her petite face. ‘What’s wrong?’

‘It’s nothing.’ She replies, a small smile on her vibrant red lips, but there is zero conviction in her voice.

‘Yeah, okay. How about you tell your face then.’ I bite back.

‘Livy…’

‘Look, mom. You don’t need to lie to me. I can tell when something is off just by looking at you so why don’t you do yourself a favor and spill.’ My voice is calm, eager to coax her out of her sudden and totally unexpected slump. Something niggles at the back of my mind and I try my best to shut it down. My mom was fine a second ago and now she’s looking at me, all teary-eyed, like her whole damn world is about to come crashing down around her.

At first I thought I'd failed. Just as I always do, but then he throws her head back against the headrest and a weary, almost defeated sigh rolls from her whole body. ‘I thought everything was going great.’ She whispers out into the silence and her voice is laced with raw, unfiltered emotion. Something which is totally foreign to me and my eyes grow wide with shock. This is not the woman I am used to. Nor is this the birth-giver who I have come to know and despise over the years.

‘Whoa… hold up a second.’ I struggle to get the words out, my mind racing five steps ahead and I’m a little worried as to where this conversation is headed. ‘You’re gonna have to start over because you’ve lost me, mom. What do you mean everything was going great?’ Nothing good ever comes from my mom when she talks in the past tense. I try my hardest to keep my voice light and even but my heart hurtles down, right into the pit of my stomach like a dead weight, slowly preparing me for whatever bombshell she’s about to throw at me next.

I’m not as stupid as my mother likes to believe. I think she’s quick to forget that we have been here before, in this very same situation time and time again. Usually she’s the one calling the shots, and I’m forced to follow along helplessly like a lost little puppy. But not this time. I know better than anyone how this situation is about to play out. In the past I would have been all for it. Well, I really wouldn’t have had much choice on the matter. Before, I was desperate to get up and leave. I was desperate to get out of Manorcroft as soon as I arrived here, but so much has happened since then. So much has changed, and now when I stop and think about it, I can’t think of spending my life anywhere else.
