-- Day 16 --

Yesterday afternoon, Evie polished off the small box of cereal. Then by the evening, she'd eaten the last few of the fig bars. Finally, as the sun had started to set, she'd ventured out of the cave, found a closer bear locker, and tucked the remaining food inside before returning to the cave for the night.

Now as the birds start to sing and the sun lights up the entrance to the cave, her stomach starts to softly rumble. She sighs. She's going to have to leave her shelter again. Evie walks to the cave entrance and pauses, listening for anything unusual. Eventually, she moves out into the sunlight. Staying hidden just off the trail, she heads to her small food stash.

Evie stops to listen again. Deciding she's still alone, she emerges from the shadows and walks up to the bear locker. She unclasps it, reaches in and grabs a random can, then refastens the doors.

As she quickly ducks down in the tall grass by a large tree, she looks down at the container in her hand. Refried beans. Not exactly what she'd prefer for breakfast, but she'll make do. Turning the can upright, Evie frowns. Up until now, she hadn't thought about how to open these cans.

Shoulders drooping, tears start to well up in her eyes as she glares angrily at the can. She lets it fall to the ground. She could check the other cans – maybe at least one has a pull tab – but if she can't find a way into the ones without it, then she's even lower on food than she'd thought.

Evie lays down in the grass and curls up into a ball. The ground beneath her face quickly soaks up her tears and leaves a thin layer of mud on her cheek and down one side of her long braid. For a long time, she lies there, simply letting the emotions take over.

At last, the tears slow. Dragging the hem of her shirt across her face, she sniffles loudly and pushes herself upright. She narrows her eyes at the can.

Turning slowly, Evie looks around until she finds a big rock with a sharp point on one side. Grabbing it, she crawls over to the can and slams the edge down onto the side of the metal cylinder. It rolls out from under the rock with barely a dent. Evie looks all around and waits, listening to her surroundings.

All is calm.

She scoots up close to the can and looks down at it. Leaning away, she grabs a few more rocks and jams them up against each side of the can. Then Evie takes another swing. The can rolls forward, and two rocks loudly smack into one another. Evie's eyes widen and she flattens herself out on the ground, scanning the area for movement.

Nothing.

Sitting up again, Evie checks the can. The dent is a little bit bigger now. She sets it between the barrier rocks again. Then, just for good measure, she places a few more stones around the perimeter of the can.
