Chapter 17

The sun was going down by the time that they had walked back up to the stream. They finished the new channel, connecting it to the wide place they’d made high up on the ridge, and immediately the water began to pour down into the new stream. The water gurgled and chuckled, the pleasant sound making them all smile. Layla stooped to drink from the place where the water tumbled down into the new channel, and the others did the same.

“Come on,” said Jason. “We need to make sure that the flow is able to travel the whole way down. This channel might get blocked by debris on the first fill.”

It was a good thing that they went down to check. The stream had been blocked by debris. In fact, it had happened several times. Each time they found a blockage, they had to stop and dig out the mud from the stream bed, cutting it out and throwing it to the side without deepening their new stream so much that they caused the water to pool and overflow. It was harder than they’d expected, but eventually they got to the pool and watched with immense satisfaction as the water flooded into the pool.

“We’ll need to keep going up the new channel and improving it,” Layla said thoughtfully. “The other stream is so clearly reinforced. It looks like they’ve used thick clay to do the work, and probably been up there to keep it fixed over the years. If the stream beds aren’t maintained, then one day the sides will collapse, and the water will just run over the sides and pour down the ridge.”

“There’s a source of good clay not too far away,” Sera said thoughtfully, “though a clay pit is something that I don’t have here on the ranch, I’m afraid. Still, we can definitely get some. That’s a good idea, Layla, I’d never thought of that. That way, we can preempt any problems.”

At that moment, they realized that a clump of mud had partially choked the ingress for the water into the pool, and they were all busily engaged in clearing it for a few minutes. When they stood back, watching the water flow freely again, Jason spoke.

“Where does the building timber come from, Sera?”

“Goal County,” Sera replied. “South and west of Jacksen. The timber crosses county lines with trading caravans. The climate there is much better suited to that kind of thing than the climate here in Jacksen.”

“I can believe it,” Jason said, watching the water gathering in the pool as the evening swiftly darkened around them and the stars came out. “You know, before I got into the militia in Roan County, I thought of being a trader.”

“Really?” Layla asked. “The way you fought the other night, well, I wouldn’t have thought you’d ever had any other profession.”

“Oh, I never did it,” Jason laughed. “I said I wanted to be a trader, not that I managed to become one. No, I got offered my
