Chapter Sixteen

With the Siedren completely annihilated by the Master Cannon, this was the moment of truth – the time when the two operational Necro ships would either give up on the Axtril and start firing at it, or try something new to finish off the Kolanstron.

“They know about the ten second recharge,” said Nation.

“Neither the Scalar nor the Tirinos are close enough to the breach to take advantage.”

“Our shields are almost gone. They won’t wait around.”

“No.”

“I’ve got a link with the Axtril’s external sensors, ma’am,” said Reynolds.

“Thank you, soldier.”

With the link made, Keller was able to access the feed from the pyramid’s main arrays. Through these, she was able to observe the movements of the Necro warships. They circled at low speed, travelling in opposite directions. She watched them complete three full circuits of the Axtril.

“You’re up to something,” said Nation.

“Maybe.”

He didn’t pursue his statement. Instead, he pointed at one of the feeds on the main screen. “What about this ship in stasis? It’s less than a hundred klicks overhead.”

“You’re worried in case someone pushes an explosive onto us?”

“You did it before.”

“If they’re determined to destroy the Kolanstron, they’ll have to drop an incendiary large enough to take out the pyramid at the same time.”

“I don’t like giving my enemy the luxury of choosing whether I live or die.”

Keller didn’t answer at once. She watched the Scalar and the Tirinos as they completed another lap of the Axtril, crossing over and continuing on their course. In her mind, she pictured the location of the Necro ground troops, in the sections surrounding the upper parts of the main bay.

With steady hands, she brought the Kolanstron vertically upwards, further from the floor. The walls came closer as the bay narrowed. The cannonship drew level with the stasis-held Necro craft, which wasn’t positioned in the right place for her to involve it in what was to come.

“Do you think Fleet Admiral Cody will be upset if we damage another one of these pyramids?” Keller asked.

“He’ll probably have something to say on the matter.”

“Yeah. I bet he will.”

The Axtril’s external sensors showed the two Necro spaceships as they closed in at the end of one more circuit. Keller waited, her eyes fixed to the screen. From her periphery, she saw Nation’s head turn sharply towards her as he realised what was coming.

The Scalar and the Tirinos crossed and Keller activated the Master Cannon at fifty percent of its maximum. For the second time, energy erupted from the nose of the Kolanstron. The blue beam seared a hole directly through the area where Keller hoped the bulk of the Necro troops would be holding position. Several hundred kilometres of warship grade alloy didn’t slow the beam and it emerged from the side of the Axtril. It cut through the Scalar and then the Tirinos, before terminating more than a billion kilometres away.

The effects were devastating. The rapid expansion of heat energy pushed aside the metal structure of the pyramid, until the hole was almost a hundred kilometres in diameter.
