I hide out in my car next to the tennis hill, waiting for Kayli to finish up. Since itâs starting to sprinkle, my deliberate avoidance isnât too obvious. When Kayli runs up, Natalieâs still nowhere in sight. Thank God.
âHey, hon,â I say as she yanks open the door, tosses in her stuff, and jumps in. The enormous smile across her face is a dead giveaway somethingâs up. âTennis went well?â
âOh my gosh! Oh my gosh!â She bounces in the back as I make my way out of the parking lot. âThe greatest thing ever happened! Mom, itâs life-changing. You have to say yes!â
âWhat is it?â I try to keep my voice steady. I already feel my hot button being pressed as the words have to come out of her mouth. No, we donât have to do anything.
âA few months ago, Liz, Anna, Chloe and their moms all got tickets to this concert thatâs tomorrow night, but now Chloe and her mom canât go. She said we could buy their tickets from them. Theyâre at the Xcel Center and are in the fifth row! Oh, and weâd get to ride in a limo too. A limo would pick us up! Mom, please say yes! Please, please!â
Dear Lord. Natalie is taking Liz to a concertâ¦when sheâs eleven? I think my first, and only, concert was when I was nineteen. And fifth row at the Xcel Center? I canât even imagine how much these tickets are. Oh, and a limo too. I mean, maybe for a very special birthday or Christmas present, and maybe if itâs for their favorite band in the whole wide world. Then maybe. But Kayli doesnât have a favorite band. She probably doesnât even know whoâs playing.
The beat of the windshield wipers grows louder as I look back at her face in the rearview mirror. Itâs so full of hope and excitement, not having any clue itâll all be crushed.
âHoney,â I sigh, still figuring out the best way to soften the blow. âI hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I donât see how I can say yes. For one, Iâm sure itâs a huge expense. Fifth-row tickets to a concert and a limo? Whose concert is it, even?â
âThis girl Sabrina something or other. I forget her last name, but Liz played me some of her songs before practice, and they were so cool. And Iâll pay for it.â She scooches up in her seat, pleading, âIâll pay you and Dad back. I swear.â
I stay calm. âEven if you paid for all of it, I donât think itâs appropriate for you to go to a concert like this at your age, especially when you barely know the singer.â
âBut Liz and Anna are goingâ¦â
Of course Liz and Anna are going. Sparing no expense and probably making fun of anyone who canât go too. And then I remember Tia. âBesides, you have plans that night.â
âBut I could cancel. Tia would totally understand.â
âWhat? Honey, no.â My words come out reflexively. I know Iâm supposed to guide or mentor her through a decision like this, but this feels too big.
