The office of Dr. T. Aubrey Dickson, a graduate of Tulane Medical School who practiced in Mobile, looks considerably different from modern medical offices.

Nurses pose in front of the new Providence Hospital constructed in 1902 on Springhill Avenue. (The original hospital was on St. Anthony Street and dated to 1854.) Providence was established after a brief tide of anti-Catholic sentiment led to the city council’s action to drive the Daughter’s of Charity from the management of the city hospital. Rather than dignifying the attacks—which had been motivated by a short-lived national movement called the “Know Nothing Party”—Bishop Michael Portier established Providence , which remains a strong presence in Mobile’s medical community today.
